Review: L’Occitane Sels De Bain – Relaxing Bath Salts

After my busy weekend of hen celebrations, I woke up yesterday with the severe Monday blues. And it seems I wasn’t the only one as yesterday was apparently the most depressing day of the year, or Blue Monday as it’s called. It also didn’t help that I was suffering from a two day hangover. As a result, I came home from work feeling exhausted and very sorry for myself so the only cure was to have a nice long bath and an early night.

If I’m being honest, I don’t ever need an excuse to pass an hour or two relaxing in a bath reading a book, but this time it was desperately needed! Also, at Christmas I got a present of L’Occitane Relaxing Bath Salts which I’ve been dying to try out for ages so I thought what better time to give them a whirl.

I’ve heard great things about these bath salts and so had high expectations. Made from natural essential oils of Lavender, Bergamot, Sweet Orange and Geranium, they smell absolutely amazing in the tub so I thought I was in for a real treat.

The recommendation is to put one to two spoonfuls into the bath, but after two I wasn’t happy so I went for a third. It took a while for the scent to fill the bathroom, but it got there eventually. And though I didn’t really get the feeling of essential oils in the same way you do with a bath oil, my skin was lovely and soft afterwards.

I’m always trying out new bath products, bath time is precious so it has to be amazing. Was this amazing? Hmm, not really. But would that stop me using them again? Probably not. I did come out of the bath feeling very relaxed and zen, and had a great sleep last night. Plus the scent did linger for quite a few hours after which is always good.

At €19 it’s not the cheapest and I’ll be interested to see how long the tub lasts. But it is definitely relaxing, so if you’re looking for a luxury relaxing soak and don’t mind forgoing bubbles, I say go for it!

A Quote A Day

Given that today is apparently the most depressing day of the year or ‘Blue Monday’ as it has come to be known, I think we could all do with a little pick-me-up. What is it about quotes that are so uplifting? Is it that they inspire us, motivate us, make us wish, imagine, dream? Who knows. Maybe it’s because I myself am a bit of a dreamer, but I’m a sucker for quotes, sayings, song lyrics or words in general that inspire a happy or positive thought. And if that quote or saying just happens to be accompanied by a picture? Then it’s really got my attention.

What’s the point I hear you say? Well , I’m a firm believer in positive thinking and starting each day off in a positive way. Sometimes that’s hard; sometimes we’re tired, or stressed, or just simply not in a good mood – we all have those days. Through reading about the power of positive thinking however, I’ve learned that the more you focus on the positive, the more positive you become. So everyday, even if I’m in a mood, or really don’t want to get out of bed, I try my best to read quotes or sayings that will make me grateful for the day and put me into a positive mindset . And more often than not, it works.

A good quote or lyric should always get you thinking. About life, about travel and adventure, about good times and bad, about past experiences and future endeavours. If I’m feeling fed up I read quotes about being grateful. When I’m happy I read funny quotes that make me laugh. When I’m stressed, I read quotes assuring me that this too shall pass. When I dream of doing something more, I read quotes about travel and adventure and seeing the world. And when I’m sad, I read about love (which is sometimes accompanied by a good girly cry!).

Scrolling through my phone this morning, I decided to share some of my favorites with you all here. Disclaimer: *Cheese Alert* This is probably not a post for the less romantic dreamers among you.

I would happily sit and read these to while away the time on a quiet evening and even love to create my own quote pictures using my favourite word apps. Speaking of which, if haven’t yet discovered WordSwag or InstaQuote and you’re into this sort of thing, then you should definitely check them out.

There are so many more I could share but for now I will leave you with these, and hopefully inspire a happy thought or two on this dreary ‘Blue Monday’!

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

It’s almost the weekend, and I’m very excited because this weekend I’m heading away for my lovely friend Nikki’s hen party. Whoop! I can’t disclose any information as yet – it’s all a very top secret surprise for the bride-to-be. But it’s going to be GREAT.

If you’ve read some of my earlier posts, you’ll know that one of my big resolutions for 2016 is to go to places I’ve never been before, and this trip will be my first destination. Although I won’t be sharing it with my new hubbie, I love nothing more than a good girly night away, and what better reason for a girls night than to give our fab friend a spectacular send off into married life. That, combined with the fact that I haven’t had a night out since the wedding, means this is set to be one hell of a party!

I promise to fill you in when I get back, and while I’ll be keeping the weekend’s antics to myself, I will be sharing my first travel review of the year. If you can’t wait until then though, remember you can always head over to my Instagram where I’ll be sharing lots of lovely details over the next few days.

Until then, happy weekend! Cluck, Cluck…

Shake it like a Polaroid Picture

Photographs. Who doesn’t love them? Well maybe some of you don’t, but they are one of my biggest loves. I’m obsessed, and anyone who knows me will attest to that. I love nothing more than spending an evening going through boxes of old photos or flicking through my laptop, laughing to myself at the memories they invoke. It’s also not unusual for me to sit in my parents’ house for hours on a Sunday afternoon, sorting through old pictures and relaying stories with my Mum about times gone by.

For this post however, I’m going to specifically talk about my love of Polaroids. Capturing a moment and producing an instant print = JOY! I’ve wanted a Polaroid camera for as long as I can remember, but they were expensive back in the day and for one reason or another I never got one. Then they kind of disappeared. Apart from my sister, I didn’t know anyone who had one. The Polaroid dream had died until one day not so long ago, the revival came. Hallelujah!

Early last year I began noticing the odd ad here and there about new Polaroid camera models as well as similar less expensive instant camera options from other manufacturers. What seemed like overnight, these ads were suddenly everywhere. No matter where I looked – television, magazines, social media; like a sign from the photo Gods, Polaroid was there!

I couldn’t ignore it any longer and so began researching different options available. My first proper reintroduction was a few months back when Dave surprised me with an account with a company called Polabora. They print your photos on Polaroids and send them to you, taking away the need for a camera altogether. Genius I thought. What I didn’t realise then was that actually loads of companies were doing this and I was just late to the Polaroid party (awkward for me). I don’t know how I missed it but I was in Polaroid heaven, and started printing a LOT of photos. I have so many printed now that I’ve recently begun working on a Polaroid wall project in our living room – but as it’s not finished yet you’ll have to wait a little longer to see it!

Anyway, I could now print as many Polaroids as I wanted, without the need to pine over a camera anymore. Or so I thought… Having the Polaroids just fuelled my infatuation further and I decided the time had come to treat myself. Given that I was also planning a wedding, what better excuse did I need?!

Our wedding was photo themed from beginning to end; we had a photographer and videographer, we had a retro style photobooth, we had photo stick props, we had a hashtag, we had signs saying please Instagram, we had an Instagram sign prop, we had Polaroid place name favours for each of our guests. And most importantly of all, we had a Polaroid camera.

When browsing wedding ideas on Pinterest, I had seen an image of a Polaroid picture line and just had to have something like it at our wedding. So, I took the long-awaited plunge and finally bought myself a Fuji Instax Mini 8 camera and 120 Polaroid films. The Instax camera is one of the cheaper options on the market, and was the perfect wedding option. I wanted to capture every single second of the day and not miss a thing. I had all my friends instructed to take as many photos as possible. They didn’t disappoint (thanks friends!).

As any bride will know, your day goes by in a heartbeat, you miss so much of what’s going on. People told me this coming up to the wedding and my god were they right. I can’t tell you how happy I am now that I have so many photos to look back on. And I don’t even have my professional photographer photos or video back yet. Can you sense me squealing with excitement? I am!

Realistically, you probably don’t need all of the photo elements that we had on your wedding day, but if you’re looking for a quick, inexpensive way to capture all the fun moments then I would definitely recommend it. We managed to hold on to about eighty Polaroids thanks to our friend Alex who made sure they all got hung up on our picture line, and I can’t tell you how many times we’ve sat looking through them already. All that’s left to do now is add them to my wall project!

All About Neutral Eyes

If you love fashion and all things Hollywood, you’ve probably been stalking your Twitter feed or the online pages of your favourite glossy mags to get the low down on all things Golden Globes today.

I dip in and out of the celeb world to be honest, but I do love a good awards ceremony and all the style and glamour that comes with them. I couldn’t sleep last night with this flu I’ve been fighting but it did have one benefit – I was awake long enough to have a sneak peak at all the gorgeous gunas (or dresses for my non-Irish readers!). White, metallics, blue and mustard were the most popular colour choices of the night, with natural, soft makeup looks also taking centre stage.

Although accompanied by an even mix of both neutral nudes and deep reds and pink lips, it was clear that soft smokey tones were dominating the eyes of the ladies on the red carpet. Varying shades of golds and browns were sported by many, with just a hint of eyeliner to frame the eye. Rosie Huntington Whiteley, JLo, Alicia Vikander and Brie Larson were just some of the stars rocking this look:

I love a good smokey eye and usually opt for dark browns and greys, but as I’m home in bed sick today feeling sorry for myself, I’ve decided to occupy my time by recreating the soft golden smokey eye look with some of my favorite products. We all have our go-to beauty products but here’s what I used to recreate my version of this popular look:

  1. Benefit Erase Paste Concealer in Medium
  2. Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette
  3. MAC Brow Pencil in Spiked
  4. MAC Fluidline Pot Eyeline in Blacktrack
  5. YSL Faux Cils Mascara in Black

Step 1: Brows – I’m just going to pause here. I have the worst brows ever, mostly due to scars I have from when I was younger meaning they don’t grow in certain places. So brow pencil is a must for me. Always. I never leave the house without it. Seriously! Anyway, after pencilling in my brows with my MAC brow pencil, I dotted some Benefit Erase Paste concealer under my eye and around the nose area to lift the dullness.

Step 2: I followed this by applying a thin base coat all over my eyes using ‘Bootycall’ from the Naked 2 palette.

Step 3: Once I had covered my entire eyelid with the base coat, I began to apply even amounts of ‘Chopper’ and ‘YDK’ on each eye, blending as I went along. These colours are light and shimmery, and so easy to use.

Step 4: To complete the eyeshadow application, I then added in a small amount of ‘Busted’ on the upper crease of my eyelids to add definition and enhance the colour.

Step 5: The next step was to add eyeliner. Taking my MAC brush 266, and using my MAC Fluidline pot, I applied a very thin line of liner to the bottom of my upper eyelid. Usually I would wear a thicker, longer line of eyeliner, but kept it minimal for this look.

Step 6: Finally, I finished off my eyes with my old reliable YSL Faux Cils black mascara.

Here’s a look at each stage of application:

Quick Six Step Application
Final Look

So there you go… My attempt at recreating a golden smokey eye. I’m no makeup artist but I do love playing around with colors and looks so hopefully you like it. Probably not the best application I’ve ever done, but not a bad effort from my sickbed!

Cosy Candle Sundays

If you follow me on Instagram you will have seen me share a picture of a Wonderwick Noir candle from the Country Candle Company a few days ago. I came to have this candle by accident really – I had bought some candles as gifts for all my lovely friends who came to celebrate my hen party a while back. There was a slight mix-up with my order however, so as an apology, the company very kindly sent me three candles from their Wonderwick Noir, Bloomsbury and Superstars collections in December.

As a serious candle addict, I am always on the look out for new candles. I go through candles quicker than I go through anything else, in fact, if I was to add up the amount I go through in a month let alone a year, I think I’d be in for a serious shock. But it’s love what can I say…!

Although all three candles are nice, it’s not very often I come across a new candle that stacks up against my old favorites, but the Wonderwick Noir candle in Spiced Lime is AMAZE. Apart from its sleek design, the scent is divine and the burn is brilliant. The candle’s wooden wicks claim to ‘throw the scent further, faster‘ and I have to say our living room smells amazing when it’s lighting – so far, so good. Aside from that, many candles claim to have long burn times but only burn down the centre leaving so much unmelted wax behind. This is a serious pet peeve of mine! But I was pleasantly surprised to find this candle burns evenly down its glass container. I’m loving it, so much so, I’m only lighting it for short periods of time so it doesn’t burn out too quickly.

If you’re a candle addict like me then this is one definitely worth checking out. Perfect for a cosy Sunday on the couch, which is exactly how I plan on spending my Sunday today while I nurse my flu.

Hope you’re all having a lovely cosy Sunday too!

We Survived!

We did it, we did it people, we survived the first week back in work for 2016! Cue cheesy 90’s song…’sing hallelujah sing it‘. Ehem. (I tend to do that by the way, go off in song tangents, you can ignore it, or join in, whatever comes naturally!).

Let me tell you, on Monday morning I wasn’t sure how I was going to get through the week. 735 emails awaited me when I logged on after my five weeks off, but I soldiered through and I don’t think I’ve ever been happier that it’s Friday. Well maybe I have, but I’m pretty freakin’ happy today!

Although I haven’t got out totally unscathed as I’m smothering with a cold/flu type thing, I’m happy with how my first week of the year has gone. I managed to write every day and tomorrow, I get to lie in for as long as I want. THAT fills me with joy!

So on that note, I wish you a Happy Friday folks. I hope it’s been a good one for you all too.

Embracing Change

We’re brought up knowing that the one certainty in life, is that nothing is certain. If we know it, and understand it, then why is it so difficult when change comes our way?

Some change is good, amazing in fact. It makes our lives interesting and fun and unpredictable. But the kind of change that comes out of nowhere and slaps you in the face? That’s the change I’m taking issue with today!

People have varying ways of coping with slap-in-the-face change, some better than others of course. But it’s confession time. I am not one of those people. I one of the ones who’s mouth goes dry, nerves build up in my gut and I hover for days between dizziness and nausea depending on the extremity of the change. It all sounds very dramatic I know.

Today I found out something is changing, just as I had arrived at a happy, comfortable, easy, breezy place with it. It’s a new year and it’s all about change I get that – I’ve been talking nothing but change for the past few days and now it’s come back to bite me in the ass! Don’t you just hate when that happens?

A 2015 version of me would have had a complete panic about it, but in the spirit of embracing positivity this year, I’m going to need to embrace the change also. Damn. What was it Lemony Snicket said – if we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives? I best get on with it so…

Rant over. I feel better. Thanks for listening! 🙂

I think it’s time to go meditate now. Ommmm…

Resolution Time

resolutions-1

In keeping with all things New Year, it’s time to write my list of New Year’s resolutions. I know I’m a little late to the party, but better late than never eh?!

I wouldn’t say I have the best track record when it comes to keeping New Year’s resolutions or goals that I set for myself, I always have the best intentions but one thing leads to another throughout the year and more often than not, resolutions get forgotten. Yes there are the old reliables that appear on my list every year such as losing weight, getting fitter, managing to squeeze into those size 10 jeans that have been sitting in my wardrobe for the past five years… But let’s call a spade a spade here, they aren’t much craic as resolutions go, so this year I’m focusing on positivity.

5a1f2ca2-6cd5-416c-874e-f95e91c5641b_560_420

For 2016, I’ve decided my resolutions are all going to be things I REALLY want to do and I’ve narrowed it down to four, achievable goals. Would I say no to having a body like Beyoncé? Of course not! But while I’m waiting for that to happen, I’m going to push on with these:

1. Write More

Tick! Well, this blog is the first step and you all know by now I’m so nervous I might pee my pants. But I’m writing, and that’s a helluva lot more than I was doing five days ago.

2. Experience the Year of the Holiday

Ahhh the Year of the Holiday. This is something a good friend told me about before I got married. A couple she knew spent their first year of marriage travelling to all the places they wanted to see before they settled down, bought a house and started on the baby making. I told Dave about it not long before we tied the knot and we both agreed we had to jump on board that bandwagon and have some fun before it’s time for the serious stuff.

With that in mind, we plan on spending the next year visiting new places we’ve never been (or been to together) while also revisiting some of our old favorites near and far. The list is a work in progress, but I think you’ll agree there’s plenty to get us started! We’re currently at twelve locations and counting:

  • Paris
  • Ibiza
  • Rome
  • London
  • New York
  • Nashville
  • Kerry
  • Bali
  • Australia
  • Fiji
  • Thailand
  • Washington DC

Now let’s be honest, unless we win the lotto sometime soon, we’re most likely not going to get to all of those places in the next twelve months and we also have to try squeeze it all in, in between work and real life. But our flights to Paris are booked and I’m hoping I’ll have our Ibiza and Rome flights boxed off shortly too. Yippee!

3. Buy Something Fabulous I Can’t Afford

I’ve had my eye on a new Chanel quilted lambskin flip bag for quite some time now and I think this year is the time to purchase (but shh, don’t tell Dave!).

classic_flap_nbsp-sheet.png.fashionImg.low.png

4. Worry Less

I’m a divil for the worrying but this year I’m making a conscious effort not to sweat the small stuff. I’m not gonna lie, this could be a toughy as each year brings its own stress. But hopefully I’ll be so busy writing and having fun travelling that I won’t have time to worry!

So there we go folks. It’ll be a challenge but I’m moving full steam ahead.

Have you any fun New Year’s resolutions for 2016?

Monthiversary!

With all the excitement of getting my first blog post live yesterday, I forgot to mention perhaps one other equally exciting event… Dave and I were married one month yesterday. Hurrah!

It’s cheesy as hell I’m aware, but at least I’ve now migrated from weekiversaries to monthiversaries. Dave will be especially pleased as I don’t think he could handle me wishing him weekly happy anniversaries for the next year!

Given how much I absolutely LOVED my wedding, I’m sure I’ll be sharing details on all the planning and finer details over the coming weeks. I’m a post-wedding bride in mourning with nothing to plan, what an alien feeling it is. Thankfully three of my dearest friends are all getting married over the next few months so I think I’ll get away with talking all things weddings for a another little while yet.

For now… Happy Monthiversary hubbie!
