Review: Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette

As some of you may know, I recently purchased the Urban Decay Gwen Stefani eyeshadow palette. I’m a big fan of Urban Decay eyeshadows, they are really pigmented, have great holding power, and their palettes last for ages. So naturally, when they released this limited edition range, I was super excited to get my hands on it.

There is a lot of hype surrounding this palette at the moment, so I’m sure you’ve read many great reviews by now. But I thought, what the hell, I’ll add another one into the mix. I love it so much, I couldn’t not write about it!

The shades in this palette are just gorgeous, there is a good mix of matte and shimmer shadows so it’s perfect for both day and night time makeup looks. I tend to wear more matte shadows, particularly in day time, but you can’t beat a bit of shimmer for a night out on the town so this is a winner all round really.

The first row is mostly base colours, it has several nude shimmers, and a great matte burgundy shade at the end called Punk. This is, hands down, my favourite eyeshadow in the palette, and my new go-to shade. I’ve used it several times already and am totally obsessed.

The second row is a mix of matte and shimmer nudes, moving more towards brown tones so great for a soft daytime look. They are great staple shades, and the dark grey shade Serious at the end, would add some good smokiness to any eye look.

And finally the third row is where the colour pop comes. I mean look at that pink and gold! Shimmer, shimmer, shimmer… It has the feel of an 80’s throwback which I’m loving and the pigment on these is just amazing (as with all the colours in the palette).

I have yet to get adventurous with these particular colours, but I can’t wait to channel my inner 80’s child and get playing around with that pink, and the blue could be great with the black for a very dramatic eye too. So I’ll get sharing a post on some colourful, playful looks soon. For now however, as Punk is my favourite shade, I’ve put together a look using this, along with Bathwater and Zone.

To achieve this look, I lightly coated my eyes all over with Bathwater as a base. I then added Zone to my upper eyelid, leaving just the very inner part of my eye free of colour. To blend these, I added a generous layer of Punk, and using my blending brush, blended it into the crease of my eyelid, the eyelid itself, and under my waterline.

To add a little extra drama, I then applied a thin layer of Urban Decay Ink for Eyes eyeliner on my upper and lower eyelid, and finished it off by applying my Benefit They’re Real mascara to my eyelashes.

So there you go, a simple and quick smokey eye look.

If you’re a beauty lover then this is a must in your makeup bag. The palettes aren’t cheap, this one will set you back €46.00. However, the palette will last you for months so definitely a good investment. I’ve used it nearly every day since I bought it three weeks ago, so much so, I’m wondering should I buy another one before it goes off the market!

Have you tried this yet? If so, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Happy hump day!

Paris, Oui

So this Thursday myself and the hubby are off to lovely Paris, and I’m so frickin’ excited! While up to now the Year of the Holiday has only brought us to places in Ireland, finally we are managing to get further afield.

We’ve both been to Paris before but not together, and there’s so much I want to see and do. The only thing scuppering the trip at the moment is the fact that I’m smothering with a cold, and I am unable to wear shoes as I split my ankle open. Long story but I’ve basically been living in my flip flops for the past week (resulting in said cold!).

But in keeping with my focus on being positive this year, I’m not going to let any of those obstacles stop me. It’s been many years since I was last in Paris, and I didn’t really see much at all, so I’ve got a lot on my list this time around.

We have three days and four nights so I’m calling on all my lovely readers to send me some tips on what to do, where to go, where to eat, drink etc. I have all the obvious places on my list, but I’m looking for recommendations for non-touristy, quirky, out of the ordinary type of places.

So if you’ve been to Paris over the last few years and found any little hidden gems then please let me know so I can add them to my list.

I’ll be taking you all with me via snapchat and Instagram so make sure you come follow me over there to see what we’re up to. I’ll share a full post on our trip when I’m back next week also.

For now, au revoir!

Review: Benefit POREfessional Matte Rescue Gel

I’m back! After a dreadful week of blogging last week, which you’ll have to forgive as I was up to my eyes in work, I’m back with lots of great reviews and posts for you this week. It’s so funny how when you become used to blogging everyday, you really miss it when you can’t do it. I feel I’ve had no creative output for the past week so I’m happy to be back in the saddle today (apart from the rotten cold I have).

So now on to today’s review, which is Benefit’s POREfessional Matte Rescue Gel. Now, where to start. So I’m a big fan of Benefit products, as I’ve said before I love their POREfessional and That Gal primers as well as countless other offerings from the brand. But I was let down by this, I mean seriously let down.

I started testing this out about a week ago. Given that it was my busiest week in work, I knew there wouldn’t be a whole lot of time for touching up my makeup and given the claims that this gel makes on its ability to reduce shine, I thought it would be the perfect product to get me through the week.

I don’t have particularly oily skin, it’s probably more normal to dry, but like most people, come the afternoon if I don’t have a good primer on, my T-Zone area can get shiny and my makeup can start to come off in those areas.

According to Benefit, this product claims to instantly minimize pore appearance. The lightweight, water-based gel overpowers shine and absorbs excess surface oil, leaving a natural-looking matte finish. Skin feels smooth and refreshed.

Benefit recommend wearing POREfessional primer over the gel so I tried a few days with primer over it, and a few days with no primer. Overall result? Without the primer this just doesn’t work in my view. Yes, with the primer you could say it held my makeup better, but no different than my primer normally would without the matte rescue gel which left me feeling a bit cheated.

Did it instantly minimize pore appearance? I don’t think so. Did it minimize shine and absorb excess surface oil? While it did initially when first applied, it was only a matter of time before the effects wore off. And I’m not talking long here. On a day when I didn’t wear a primer on top of it, I took a photo of my makeup when first applied, then took another photo four hours later just to give you an idea. As you can see, the shine is there. The light in these two images is different as one was taken at home, and the second was taken when I was out and about but you get the gist. Bummer.

After Makeup Application

Four Hours Later

The gel does smell lovely and fresh, and has a really light texture which means it spreads evenly over your face. You only need a very small amount (slightly larger than pea size) which is always a bonus but is that enough to make me like the product? No. I kind of don’t see the point to it. If you’re primer works anyway then why do you need this? It doesn’t add anything extra so for me, you’d be better just sticking to your primer in this case.

I hate that I’m saying this because I love Benefit, but this one gets a big fat no from me I’m afraid. At €31 it’s not cheap and there are much better ways to spend your money in my opinion.

Have any of you tried this? If so I’d love to hear how you got on because I’ve heard so many positive things about it, but I don’t get it. I really wanted to, but I just don’t.

Happy Paddy’s Day

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, or Paddy’s Day as us Irish like to call it. This is possibly one of the greatest days of the year, a day where our little nation gets noticed and celebrated by the world. Sure we’re so much craic why wouldn’t you all want to celebrate with us?!

Unfortunately, for the first Paddy’s Day ever, I have to work. This week is also the busiest week of the year where I work, but I’ve got my green hat on and I’m embracing it. The music is playing on the radio, we’re having a sing song, and most of all, we’re having fun.

I don’t know one person who isn’t proud to be Irish. For such a small country, we’ve got a pretty big presence around the world, and it’s on days like today that we feel most proud.

So wherever you are this Paddy’s Day, I hope you’ve got a nice cold drink in your hand and you’re getting ready for some craic agus ceoil.

Sláinte bar agus beannacht libh go leir. Lá fhéile pádraig sona duit!

Let’s Get Social

So as you may know by now, I’m a big fan of Social Media. I’m one of those people who probably spends a little too much time on my phone, but all in the name of blogging I say.

Having multiple social media platforms has really helped me to grow my blog, and every day I’m gaining new followers which I’m so grateful for. But in order to do that, you need to put time and effort into creating, sharing and editing great posts and images on your social pages.

There are many arguments that suggest we are all too ‘plugged in’ and need to make time to switch off from the digital world. While I understand the arguments, and agree with them to some extent, without social media my blog wouldn’t be getting nearly as much growth or exposure as it is. So what I’m really saying here is that I’ve decided to embrace it and I hope you all come join me over there too.

So please come follow me if you’re not already, have a look at my pages and let me know what you think. You can find all my social details here:

Monday Motivation

Monday mornings are never easy, but when you have to get up for work after a three day wedding and begin your busiest working week of the year… That is a Monday morning like no other. It’s a puffy eyes, sick tummy, messy hair, caffeine seeking, tear inducing kind of Monday morning.

Exhaustion combined with the need for a serious detox means my writing ability isn’t at its best today, so you will have to forgive my lack of blogging. Instead I’m going to share some of my favourite Monday Motivation memes and quotes to give you all a bit of a lift!

I’m certainly in need of some inspiration this morning, and as you all know, I love a good quote. So hopefully this will help you get through your day too.

Happy Monday! Eugh.

Upcoming Beauty Reviews

Things have been very busy over the past couple of weeks so I haven’t got nearly as many beauty reviews written as I would have liked. But I’ve been trying out lots of new products and I’m excited to share all my thoughts on them with you.

There will be full reviews up on all these products shortly but here’s a sneak peak into what I’ve been putting to the test:

Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette

A few weeks ago I bought the UD Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette and it is amazing. There are a great mix of colours, lots of soft nude and brown shades, combined with a few very strong shades like blue, burgundy and black.

I’m a massive fan of UD palettes in general so I was really excited to get this, and so far it’s is looking like a good all-rounder. Keep an eye out for some of my makeup looks using this palette which will be live next week.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream

Okay so I’ve read loads of reviews of Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream and I was expecting wondrous, ‘magic’ results. Like, it’s nice and all but it hasn’t worked any magic on me so far. And the biggest question I’m asking is, is it worth the €90 price tag? I’m not convinced so far. I’m worried this is all hype and no substance…

But, I’ve only tried it a couple of times so in the interest of fairness, I’m going to give this another week or two before I share a full, detailed review.

Benefit POREfessional Matte Rescue Gel

I really love Benefit primers and their ‘That Gal’ offering has been a staple in my makeup bag for years. I also like their POREfessional offering, so when they released this mattifying gel in January, I instantly added it to my wish list.

I have dry skin, well maybe normal to dry, so I don’t suffer with excess oil on my face. I do however like most people, experience some shine in the afternoons around my T-Zone area. I’ve read that this does wonders for keeping shine at bay so I’ll keep you posted on my thoughts once I’ve given it a proper go.

Urban Decay Ink For Eyes Felt Tip Eyeliner Pen

For those of you who read a lot of my beauty posts, you’ll know that I’m a big fan of MAC eyeliners. I use their Penultimate Eyeliner Pen as my every day eyeliner, and their Fluidline pot for a more dramatic look.

Because I’ve been using these for so long, I got a bit lazy about trying other market alternatives so when I was in Urban Decay a few weeks ago, I decided to try their version of a felt tip eyeliner pen, Ink for Eyes.

It’s super easy to use, I’m really liking it so far. The only downside I’ve noticed is that it does start to dry quite quickly on application so I’ll be watching it over the next while and will report back soon.

I will get full blog posts on each of these products up over the next week or two, I promise!

In the meantime, have you tried any of these? If so I’d love to hear your thoughts.
