Simply Lippy Challenge Day 211 | Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Lip Colour in Shade 110, Blush

The latest lipstick release from Rimmel is a liquid matte lip colour, following the trend that many beauty brands have followed over the past year or so. I don’t know if it’s a 90s style revival driving the release of so many matte lipsticks, but I am loving them and this new release is no exception.

Naturally when I read about this new collection I was excited to give them a try, and the first shade I tried was a peach toned nude shade which has a lovely pigment as I’ve come to expect from Rimmel lippies.

The colour pay off is excellent and just one layer of this will go a long way to giving your lips a matte look. While the colour itself is nice, I have to admit, I’m much more excited by the bolder shades which I have a feeling are going to be gorgeous.

The formula is wet when you first apply, and it does take a minute or two for it to try in like most liquid mattes. It’s not moisturising or hydrating, and if I was having a very bad dry lip day which I do get from time to time, I’m not sure that this would be the best lippy option as my lips did start to feel a little dryer as the day went on.

The reason I like liquid mattes is mostly because of how long they last on the lips and this one definitely has lasting power. It didn’t flake or crack throughout the day, and the colour really remaind true to the colour it was when I first applied it which I always like in a lipstick.

Given how nice the pigment is and how well it lasted, I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of the collection and see how they compare. But for now, I’m pretty impressed overall and will happily wear it again.

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 210 | Penneys PS Matte Lip Kit in Shade Obsessed

You may recall a few weeks ago I tried out one of the new matte lip kits from Penneys and fell absolutely in love with it. Not only was the shade incredible, but the finish and staying power were both pretty great too.

So, naturally when trying out my second shade in the collection today, I was excited to see if it lived up to the very high expectations I now have of these lippies. And it did, well kinda.

The formula is the same great formula that I experienced when trying out the first shade; it is smooth and though quite wet when you first apply, it dries in very quickly with great colour pay off.

The liner is creamy and smooth as I expected, and the light formula makes it very easy to apply and blend before adding the liquid lipstick element to it.

Where this doesn’t quite live up to expectations for me however, is with the shade. The lightest shade in the collection, this one is just a little non-descript for me, and a bit paler than I was hoping for.

The shade is a pink nude that has a mauve undertone to it and though it’s nice, it doesn’t have the amazing impact that the bright red shade did. I think that’s personal preference more than anything really as many people prefer nude tones over bright or bold.

The good thing about it is that it works with any makeup look, simple or dramatic, and for that reason is a good all rounder choice.

It’s has a super matte finish though so don’t expect it to be balm-like or moisturising either!

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 209 | Wet n Wild Megalast Matte Lipstick in Shade 905D, Smokin’ Hot Pink

I’m sure you already know that as budget lipsticks go, Wet n Wild is one of those brands that has really surprised me over the past few months. Some of their lipsticks I have liked more than others, but one I’ve become a big fan of is their Megalast collection.

These lipsticks initially give you the impression of being quite dry, but once you start to blend on the lips, the creamy element comes through and they blend much easier than you would expect.

Not only do they blend easily however, the pigment is bold and brilliant, and you get excellent colour pay off from just a few light layers of application, especially with a bright shade like this one.

It’s not a hydrating lipstick, but I definitely think it gives some moisurisation as it’s not drying, and has a soft cream finish which feels really nice to wear.

I did reapply it during the day but only once, and that was after eating lunch. So if it’s staying power you’re after, then this is a brilliant budget friendly option.

Have any of you tried these Wet n Wild lippies? As always, send your thoughts and comments my way as I’d love to hear what you think.

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 208 | Catrice Matte Lip Artist Lip Crayon in Shade 060, Merl’ Oh!

In contrast to yesterday’s lip crayon disaster, I decided to reignite my love for lip crayons by trying out this one from Catrice. I’ve tried many, many lip products from Catrice over the past six months but never one of these.

When I applied this to my lips my first thought was Whoa! That shade! It is a very rich, very deep berry wine shade and though I wouldn’t usually wear a shade as dark as this in Summer, I absolutely love it!

It is rich and creamy and so easy to apply. You need a very small amount due to the amazing pigment and colour pay off, and it blends like an absolute dream too.

The formula itself is smooth and very moisturising, as I have come to expect from most Catrice lippies, and it completely restored my faith in lip crayons after my Sephora fail yesterday.

One thing I love most about lip crayons is the fact that you can line your lips in the same way you would using a lip liner, then you just fill them in. They are a great 2-in-1 alternative product and I really just can’t get enough of them right now!

This shade won’t be for the faint hearted as it is very bold, but for those of you who like a daring lip, this would be absolutely perfect for a dull Winter’s day to brighten up your makeup look and give it a dramatic pop.

I for one, will definitely be wearing it again.

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 207 | Sephora Flash Jumbo Matte Lip Pencil in Shade 02, Coral Express

Like many beauty lovers, Sephora is my holy grail. Whenever I am in a city where there is a Sephora store, I take a visit and happily while away the minutes and sometimes hours, swatching and trying out products to buy. In fact, I have never left a Sephora store empty handed!

But for all the products I’ve bought over the years, I had never try one of their own brand lipsticks so for the sake of my lipstick challenge, I decided to buy a few and put them to the test.

The first one I tried out today, was this jumbo lip pencil, which really is a lip crayon, and though I am completely in love with the shade, I’m sadly not that impressed by the formula.

The pigment is gorgeous and this shade is exactly the kind that I love; it’s bright, bold and the perfect shade of coral pink (it’s called Coral Express though I do think it’s more pink than coral personally). Because of the incredible pigment, the colour pay off is also brilliant so I do love that.

However, the matte formula is very matte and quite difficult to apply. I had to really work hard to apply this on my lips evenly, and a lot of layering was involved. What’s more, when I went to blend it by puckering my lips together, there was just no creamy element at all and even that was a struggle.

By mid afternoon my lips felt so dry that I ended up having to put some Blistex balm on, which I very rarely have to do with a lipstick. And by the time late afternoon came, the lipstick had worn off because of the balm, and I didn’t even bother reapplying it.

The fact that I didn’t reapply is a real tell-tale sign for me that I don’t like something, and it has only happened a handful of times throughout the entire challenge.

The other lippies I bought are different finishes, so I’m hopeful that I will like those a lot more. However, although I love the colour, this lippy just wasn’t for me.

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 206 | Too Faced Sweet Peach Lipgloss in Shade Pure Peach

When I was in Madrid, I finally got to pick up one of the lip glosses from Too Faced’s Sweet Peach range. I’ve been admiring these online for ages so naturally, was very excited when I finally got my hands on one.

As with all glosses, I was dubious about whether this would be sticky, but it is quite the opposite. It has the most gorgeous creamy finish and because of its oil based ingredients of peach oil and coconut oil, it feels more vinyl like with absolutely no greasyness.

The colour itself is probably a little on the pale side for me as I do prefer more prominent colours, but, I’ve been wearing a lot of bold shades over the past week, so this was a welcome change and it was nice to wear something a bit more natural and less full-on.

My lips felt so smooth all day while wearing it and while it does need to be reapplied for to it’s glossy finish, I didn’t really mind that because it felt so good applying it.

I’m definitely sold on these and can’t wait to try another shade, only next time, I think I’ll buy one a bit darker in tone.

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 205 | Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Shade, Lolita

The makeup collection from Kat Von D is one of those collections that has shot to major popularity levels over the past year or two, and one that’s been on my list to try for quite a while. So when I was in Madrid last weekend, I of course paid a trip to the holy grail that is Sephora and picked up one of the liquid lipsticks to try out.

I opted for a brownish berry shade for something different and it was love from the moment I applied it. The colour itself is quite unusual for me, but I loved the richness of the tone and pigment, and still can’t get over how little I needed to get such a good colour pay off.

It’s very easy to apply with the thin angled brush applicator, and once you’ve got it on your lips, this baby is not budging for the day. Seriously! No matter what I ate or drank, the staying power was incredible so it most definitely lives up to its ‘everlasting’ title in my opinion.

I also loved how it didn’t dry out my lips at all, especially considering the long last formula. I only reapplied this once throughout the day and it wasn’t because my lips felt dry, but more because I wanted to keep the intense colour.

It’s a liquid lipstick so it’s not moisturising and it’s not really hydrating, so if you’re looking for something creamy or balm-like then this won’t be for you. However, if it’s longevity and colour pop you’re after then this is definitely a good option.

Thankfully for us Irish gals, Kat Von D launched in Debenhams a few months back and I’ve already treated myself to a few little bits that I’m waiting to use. But after using this lippy today, I’ll definitely be going back for more soon.

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 204 | Penneys PS… Matte Lipstick Crayon in Shade Tease

A few weeks back I tried out one of the new matte lip kits from Penneys and was pretty sure it was my favourite PS lipstick so far, until I tried this fab neon pink matte lip crayon.

As generalisations go, I love lip crayons and I love matte finishes, so that was a good starting point. But what really made me love this, was the amazing neon pink pigment which kept me smiling all day long.

Sure it helped that it was a hot, sunny day in Dublin, and this is exactly the kind of shade that’s perfect on a day like today. But apart from the pigment, the matte formula is very blendable and easy to work with, and the colour pay off is brilliant too.

As with some matte finishes, I was concerned this might be a bit drying or dehydrating, but it wasn’t at all, and was more creamy than expected. It wasn’t balm like or anything, but the fact that it didn’t dry out my lips was a big plus for me.

It won’t last as long as some of its matte counterparts from other brands so you will have to reapply. But, given that this is a budget brand and the shade was so fabulous, I can forgive the staying power!

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 203 | & Other Stories Optima Kiss Matte Lip Colour in Shade 10D

When & Other Stories arrived to Dublin last year, I was very excited. For years I had admired the store from afar seen as the only place I could buy anything was when visiting London, so now that it’s on my own door step, I’ve become a regular visitor.

However, until a few weeks ago I had never tried anything from their beauty range so I thought it was about time I bought a lippy or two and give them a go.

The first product I tried was one of their lip balms which was nice enough. I was a little let down by the pigment, but the formula was nice and moisturising too. So because of that, I didn’t really know what to expect from the lipstick but thankfully, I liked it a little more.

The pigment is gorgeous; it obviously helps that this is a very bold, bright pink shade, but the colour pay off is very good and the pigment was exactly what I hoped it would be. It has a cream finish that isn’t totally opaque, but still gave my lips a pretty full coverage nonetheless and felt lovely to wear.

The consistency was smooth and soft, and it blended very well on the lips which meant I didn’t need to layer it too much. But, what I did notice was, as it wore off it became kind of patchy, with some parts of my lips holding the colour a lot better / longer than others.

I wouldn’t say I loved this; it was nice to wear but I would describe it more fine than amazing, so I don’t think I’ll be running out to buy loads more. I did however love the colour, and it was perfect for another sunny day in Spain.

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 202 | NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Shade SMLC 28, San Juan

NYX lip products on the whole are pretty good, and I’m a big fan of their butter gloss and butter lipstick range which you’ll already know if you caught my Day 197 post last week.

However, there are some lip products that I haven’t quite made up my mind about, and this lip cream is one of those.

I bought this because I loved the bright orange colour, and as I’m away in Spain for the weekend, it was the perfect choice for a day wandering the sunny streets and night out on the tiles. Bright colours are my thing, so when it comes to the shade, I do love this and will definitely wear it again.

Where it falls down slightly for me though is the formula. As you can see from the photos, when you apply this you really need to layer it to build the colour but it slightly drags and pulls the colour already there so it’s hard to get an even, opaque application.

To try build it without pulling the colour too much I applied a few layers, left it for few minutes then applied a few more. It worked okay and I did like the final result, but it just takes a bit of effort getting there.

I like the softness of the formula however, and the texture is creamy, smooth and feels very moisturising on the lips. It doesn’t have amazing staying power though so you do have to reapply it, especially when eating and drinking.

So I’m kind of in two minds about it really; I love the colour and the feel, but the formula is just a bit high maintenance.

I do think in a lighter shade the formula wouldn’t be an issue at all, but because I wanted a bright pop, it fell down a little for me.

Have any of you tried these cream lippies? If so, let me know what you think. Or, have you any lipstick recommendations? Send those on too because I’ve a long way to go yet!
