Simply Lippy Challenge Day 354 | essence Made To Sparkle Velvet Metallic Liquid Lipstick in Shade 02, Get Some Sparkle On!

After the disaster that was yesterday’s metallic lip, I wasn’t sure whether to risk this one today, but in the interests of trying out everything for my challenge, I took the plunge and tried out this metallic offering from essence.

In total contrast to the glitter formula yesterday, this to me, is what a metallic lipstick should be. Plus, it’s around a third of the price of yesterday’s Too Faced counterpart.

essence, as I’m sure many of you already know, is a budget beauty brand and their products can sometimes be hit or miss. But when it comes to this metallic liquid lip, they have knocked it right out of the park in my opinion!

The pigment is absolutely incredible and looks exactly how a metal-finish shade should. The rich bronze tone is lovely, and I think it may be one of the best metallic finishes I’ve tried throughout the whole year.

The formula is wet as it’s a liquid lip so there’s no moisturising or hydrating element to it, but, I didn’t find it too drying to wear for the most part.

It dries in to give a matte finish which means the staying power is pretty good, and though it was maybe a little too bold for a day in the office, it would be a gorgeous lip choice for a festive night out on the tiles.

I like the warm tone of this and definitely think I’ll wear it again. It just goes to show that sometimes, budget brands are just as good, if not better, than some of their high end counterparts.

What do you think of metallic lips, are you a fan?

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 353 | Too Faced Melted Chocolate Liquified Metallic Lipstick in Shade, Metallic Chocolate Diamonds

Given the time of year, and the fact that I’m totally obsessed with all things Christmas, this week as you may have seen, I’ve been trying out a good few metallic lippies. You may also know that I’ve a love/hate relationship with metallics, and this shade today is the perfect example of why.

Of all the Too Faced products I’ve tried, I’ve never come across one I really don’t like, until today. Given their lip products are usually so gorgeous, I had high hopes for this but was completely let down.

Now maybe I just was expecting something different, but to me, this is not a metallic lip but a glitter lip. There are hundreds of glitter particles in the formula, so much so, I may as well have just poured a tub of glitter all of my face.

While I love a subtle glow or shimmer as much as the next person, I’m really not a glitter fan so the minute I applied this, I knew I wasn’t going to like it.

The formula itself is fine but you can feel the graininess of the glitter so the texture isn’t smooth at all. While there is a good bronze pigment, I couldn’t get past the sparkle on my lips to try find any other real positives with it.

If you’re a glitter fan, then I think you’ll love it because once applied, it’s almost impossible to get the glitter off straight away! My lips were glittering all day long, even though I was happy not to reapply it after it started to wear off.

You win some, you lose some as the saying goes and today, I lost. This lipstick just isn’t for me!

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 352 | Ciaté Lip Locked Tint & Balm Lip Duo in Shade, Sobe

Ciaté is a brand that I’ve admired from afar but until today, had never tried anything from them. I only recently discovered that they did makeup products as they are better known for their fab nail polishes, but when I saw this lip duo in the shop a few weeks ago, I decided to buy it and try it out.

One thing I’ve discovered throughout the year is that in general, I’m not a huge fan of lip duos. Rimmel’s Provocalips range is the best I’ve tried, and even at that, I think I prefer a regular lipstick really. Having said that, I was intrigued by the fact that this was a lip stain with a balm as opposed to a gloss, and thought it might be my kind of lipstick. I was wrong!

On one side you have a lip tint which is more like a lip stain, and is liquid in formula. It is very wet, and doesn’t apply well at all because of that. It’s hard to layer it as it pulls all the colour underneath and therefore you don’t get an even application. The shade is bright and the pigment isn’t bad, but that’s kind of irrelevant when it doesn’t apply well.

I thought that maybe the lip balm would even things out, so after a few minutes of leaving it to dry, I applied the balm side over it, which in all honesty just made everything worse! It dragged the colour even more and the finish just became patchy.

To try rectify the patchiness, I layered some of the pigment back over the balm which made it a little better but the back and forth was not ideal and annoyed me more than anything else. Plus, it didn’t make it that much better in the end.

I was so disappointed by this, especially as I’ve heard good things about Ciaté products before. But this is definitely not worth the spend, or the time, so unfortunately it’s a big thumbs down from me

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 351 | Catrice Velvet Matte Lip Cream in Shade 020, Rose Your Voice!

When I’ve had a disappointing lipstick day, I like to try something the following day that I’m pretty sure I’ll like and there’s no safer brand for me to do that with, than with Catrice. I’m sure you all know by now that I’m a huge fan of the brand and have a particular soft spot for their lipsticks, most of which I adore.

It’s been a while since I’ve worn one of their velvet matte lip creams however, so I decided it was time to take another one out. The last time I tried one of these in shade, Hazel Rose-Royce, I wasn’t overly impressed, and while it was nice, it wasn’t one of my favourite Catrice lipsticks.

Because of that, I didn’t know how I would get on with today’s shade, Rose Your Voice, but I needn’t have worried because I love it.

First off, the shade, while it looks like a pink-rose in the tube, it actually applies like more of a coral or peach rose. I didn’t mind that because the pigment is very good, and it’s a great all rounder shade, especially for days when you want a relaxed makeup look.

The formula is creamy, and while it’s not particularly moisturising, it doesn’t dry out the lips and keeps them soft all day. The colour pay off is very good, it blends well, and has a lovely smooth texture to it too.

Catrice describe it as having a satin matte finish, but for me, it’s a bit too wet to be described as a matte. It does dry slightly after applying, but the creamy element is much more prominent and I kind of like that.

I think after having a bad lipstick yesterday, I really liked wearing this today, it’s easy and hassle free, and I loved the soft shade too. For me, you just can’t go wrong with a Catrice lipstick.

What do you guys think, have you tried any Catrice lippies?

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 350 | L’Oreal Metallic Lip Paint in Shade 305, Cute But Psycho

Metallic lipsticks were big this year, but I’ve had a kind of love/hate relationship with them. Some I’ve tried have been lovely with a real metallic pop, whereas others have been less metallic and more glitter, which I really don’t like at all.

Thankfully, this metallic lip from L’Oreal is one of the better ones I’ve tried for actually giving a metallic finish. The colour is almost a burnt rust shade, and it definitely has a metal-like look with a brilliant pigment.

I didn’t have high hopes for the colour itself, but in that regard I’ve been pleasantly surprised. The colour pay off is very good and it gives a full coverage finish to the lips too.

However, where this lippy falls down for me is with the formula. The consistency is very wet, in fact it’s probably one of the wettest lipstick formulas that I’ve tried this year. Because of that, it takes ages to dry in, and there is no moisturising element to it at all.

It dries in matte, giving a stain element to the lips which doesn’t budge once you apply it – this one is hard to get off so you really have to like it if you’re going to wear it! For me, it just kind of bugged me throughout the day. Although the shade was fab, I didn’t like the feel of it on my lips and was happy to remove it at the end of the day.

So overall it’s another disappointing metallic lip – I’ve come to realise that they just aren’t my thing. And that’s fine, we all have our likes and dislikes when it comes to beauty!

While it’s not for me, if you’re a metallic lip fan then you might like the pigment in this. Be prepared for the long drying time though!

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 349 | Urban Decay Vice Cream Lipstick in Shade, Ravenswood

For all us lipstick fanatics, I don’t think there’s any better feeling than when you rediscover just how much you love a lipstick. For me today, that’s Urban Decay’s vice cream lipstick. For years I have loved the formula of this and no matter how much I wear it, it never gets old.

Obviously with my challenge this year, there has been less time for wearing my favourite lippies, in fact, I’ve missed some of them a lot – especially for events or nights out when I’ve really wanted to wear them. But today, I tried out a new shade in one of my favourite formula’s and let me tell you, a new love affair has begun.

This year I discovered a love for rose shade lipsticks that I never had before, and this particular one, might just be my favourite after Make Up For Ever’s Rose Wood shade which I wore back at the beginning of the year.

Apart from the gorgeous rose shade, these lipsticks have incredible pigment. They are full coverage with amazing colour pay off, and the tone is lovely and rich too. The minute you apply this, you get a gorgeous pop of colour that you can’t help but love.

The formula is thick and creamy, but very easy to apply and blend, and it feels very luxurious on your lips as you wear it. It is hydrating and moisturising, and left my lips feeling smooth all day.

The other great thing about this formula is the staying power. As much as I adore cream finishes, the staying power isn’t always as good as I’d like, however with this, you don’t need to worry about having to reapply much at all. Today I caught up with my gorgeous cousin for lunch and it stayed put all afternoon through eating and lots of chatting!

So, if you haven’t guessed already, I love it! I really didn’t expect to be still discovering new lipsticks that I love so late into my challenge but it just goes to show how many great lipsticks there are out there! This one is without a doubt a new favourite and I’ve only got fifteen or so days to go until I can wear it again. Hooray!

If you’re looking for a last minute treat for Christmas then this one is a must buy for me!

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 348 | essence Vibrant Shock Lip Paint in Shade 04, Twisted Sister

Today’s lipstick choice is not going to be for everyone, this one is bold and bright, and a little bit neon too! It’s not usually a lippy I would choose for a day in the office, but I was intrigued to see if the pigment was as bright on my lips as it looked in the tube and so I decided to try it out today.

Not only is the colour neon bright, but as soon as I applied it I got a great colour pay off and the pigment was very good too. The colour looks just as bright on, and it may even have been a little too bright – even for me.

This is the kind of shade that would be amazing on a Summer holiday; I don’t know about you but I love wearing bright colours when I’m away. However, I’m just not sure that it was very fitting for a cold December day. Although, it definitely brightened up makeup that’s for sure.

The formula is quite wet when you initially apply it, and it does take a few minutes to dry in. There is a little dragging because of that and if you want to layer it, you do need to let it dry in before you do in order to get a good, full coverage.

It wouldn’t be my favourite lipstick as it’s not quite matte and not quite cream either. However, I did love the brightness of the shade and look forward to trying it out when sunnier weather comes around again!

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 347 | H&M Lip Collection Lip Gloss in Shade, Maroon

If you’ve caught some of my posts over the last week, you’ll have seen me writing about this set of mini lip glosses that I picked up in H&M. There are five in the packet and while two of them wouldn’t usually be my choice of shade, the shades that I do like, I absolutely love.

Today’s shade, Maroon, is probably my favourite shade of all, mainly because it is a gorgeous winter berry shade, and you all know I love a berry lip.

The finish on this shade isn’t as full or opaque as some of the others; it is more sheer than anything else, yet the pigment is bold and colour pay off is very good. A light layer gives great coverage, and the colour is fab too!

The formula like with all the others, is thick and rich, and very easy to apply. It blends well, has a nice smooth texture and smells just as delicious as all the others.

The lasting power isn’t amazing, it’s fine but does need to be reapplied after eating or drinking. And as it was a very windy day, I did notice a little stickiness which I hadn’t notice before and found a little annoying.

Having said that, I had a girly day out today with some of my girls and it was the perfect lippy choice for a festive day out. I loved wearing it and it’s definitely going to stay in my makeup bag to use once my challenge is over.

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 346 | H&M Lip Collection Lip Gloss in Shade, Pink

Today’s lippy is another pick from my H&M mini lipstick set and one that I would never normally wear. But, for the purposes of trying as many shades as possible for my challenge, today I donned this very pink, pink lip.

I’m not a fan of this kind of pink, it’s just not me at all and I’m sure most of you already know that I prefer bolder colours overall. However, as with most of the other glosses in this set, I have to admit that this does have great pigment.

The finish is a medium to full coverage which I was surprised by given the gloss finish and the paleness of the shade. However, the colour pay off is good and it layers very well too.

As with the other lip glosses, the formula is quite thick with a nice texture, and it makes your lips feel smooth when you apply it. It isn’t drying, but it’s not hydrating either so you won’t get any moisturising element from it. But, given that it’s a gloss, that’s to be expected.

For me I wouldn’t wear the shade again because I’m really not a fan so I suppose the set isn’t great in that regard. However, given how budget friendly it is, one bad shade out of five really isn’t bad. Plus, it would make a great stocking filler for any lippy lover!

Review: IsaDora Stretch Lash Mascara

IsaDora is a brand that I’ve always heard good things about, but until recently, it had been a long time since I used any of their products. You may remember however, a few weeks back they relaunched in Ireland and I was very kindly invited along to the launch party to discover some of their latest and greatest products.

At the event we were given a goody bag of products, one of which was their Liquid Lip Cream which I wore on Day 275 of my Simply Lippy challenge and loved. And another product we were given, was this new Stretch Lash Mascara which I also am loving.

The brand describe this as a ‘mascara with a twist‘ and when they say with a twist, they mean it quite literally! It’s unlike any mascara I’ve used before because the applicator head twists and expands to give both a long and a short brush for a very precise application.

First things first, the brush head is silicone with very fine needles, and over the past while, I’ve become a big fan of this kind of mascara brush. I find product doesn’t clump as easily on the finer needles, and it also helps to distribute the product thinly and more evenly over the lashes. So straight off, that’s a big plus for me.

But what I really love about this, is the volume it gives. I start by extending the brush to it’s longest length and applying all over the lashes. Then, after leaving it for a couple of seconds to dry in, I twist the brush to it’s shortest length and go over my lashes a second time.

The shorter brush allows you to cover every single lash, giving more volume to the root and thickening your lashes in the process. What’s more, you can then use the shorter brush to cover your bottom lashes without worrying about the product transferring on to your face.

The pigment is very black, exactly the way I like it as I don’t tend to wear mascara in any other colour. The formula itself is light enough that you can easily build up the mascara, which in turn allows you to have either a natural coverage or full, dramatic coverage depending on what makeup look you’re going for.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that this is gimmicky, but in all honesty, it’s really not. It works so well and has become a go-to for me over the past few weeks.
