What I Wore – Wedding

As you know, this day last week I was at my friend Julie’s wedding in the beautiful Borris House in Co. Carlow. I promised last week to share a post on my outfit and make up look for the day, and not one to go back on my word, here it is!

I decided on a black pleated ZARA dress for the occasion, it is an illusion dress that from afar looks like a skirt and top. The top half is like a crepe material, with the skirt part pleated. This dress is so comfortable and easy to wear, and as I’ve put on a few pounds since my wedding (eeek), I wanted to feel comfortable in what I was wearing.

I bought this dress last winter and have already worn it to another wedding. You can never go wrong with a black dress, and there is always so many ways to make it look different with shoes and accessories.

I paired the dress with an oversize neckpiece from Betty and Biddy, a cream, gold and black threaded clutch also from ZARA and black Kurt Geiger pointed court shoes that have a gold trim at the tip.
For my makeup, I wanted a dramatic eye to compliment my dress so I went with soft, face makeup and then turned to my go-to eyeshadow palette of the moment, the UD Gwen Stefani palette, I created a coal smokey eye.

Using shade Blonde as a base, I applied this all over my eyes to start. I then applied a generous amount of shade Serious which is a lovely, rich dark grey colour to my eyelids and my inner eye socket. This was followed by mixing and blending shades Anaheim and Zone with the dark grey to soften the charcoal look slightly, whilst also keeping a dramatic effect. It’s all about blend, blend, blend here.

On the lower part of my eye under my waterline, I also applied shade Serious to enhance the look, then added black kohl eyeliner pencil to my waterline. I finished off the look by drawing a thick line of eyeliner on my upper eyelids and applying a generous amount of my Benefit ‘They’re Real’ mascara.

A dust of my MAC Soft and Gentle mineralise highlight power and some Benefit Coralista blush on my cheeks and I was ready to go! I kept my lips very nude with just a light application of my MAC Revved Up lip pencil.

Once I was ready, we set on our way, dressed and curlers in my hair (because obviously I never take them out until the last possible second!). Unfortunately I somehow didn’t manage to get a full outfit look without my curlers in, but you get the general idea.

Hope you all have a great weekend. I’m going to partying away at my lovely friend Lucy’s hen party – as I’m sure you can tell, it’s all hens and weddings at the moment!

Review: Benefit POREfessional Matte Rescue Gel

I’m back! After a dreadful week of blogging last week, which you’ll have to forgive as I was up to my eyes in work, I’m back with lots of great reviews and posts for you this week. It’s so funny how when you become used to blogging everyday, you really miss it when you can’t do it. I feel I’ve had no creative output for the past week so I’m happy to be back in the saddle today (apart from the rotten cold I have).

So now on to today’s review, which is Benefit’s POREfessional Matte Rescue Gel. Now, where to start. So I’m a big fan of Benefit products, as I’ve said before I love their POREfessional and That Gal primers as well as countless other offerings from the brand. But I was let down by this, I mean seriously let down.

I started testing this out about a week ago. Given that it was my busiest week in work, I knew there wouldn’t be a whole lot of time for touching up my makeup and given the claims that this gel makes on its ability to reduce shine, I thought it would be the perfect product to get me through the week.

I don’t have particularly oily skin, it’s probably more normal to dry, but like most people, come the afternoon if I don’t have a good primer on, my T-Zone area can get shiny and my makeup can start to come off in those areas.

According to Benefit, this product claims to instantly minimize pore appearance. The lightweight, water-based gel overpowers shine and absorbs excess surface oil, leaving a natural-looking matte finish. Skin feels smooth and refreshed.

Benefit recommend wearing POREfessional primer over the gel so I tried a few days with primer over it, and a few days with no primer. Overall result? Without the primer this just doesn’t work in my view. Yes, with the primer you could say it held my makeup better, but no different than my primer normally would without the matte rescue gel which left me feeling a bit cheated.

Did it instantly minimize pore appearance? I don’t think so. Did it minimize shine and absorb excess surface oil? While it did initially when first applied, it was only a matter of time before the effects wore off. And I’m not talking long here. On a day when I didn’t wear a primer on top of it, I took a photo of my makeup when first applied, then took another photo four hours later just to give you an idea. As you can see, the shine is there. The light in these two images is different as one was taken at home, and the second was taken when I was out and about but you get the gist. Bummer.

After Makeup Application

Four Hours Later

The gel does smell lovely and fresh, and has a really light texture which means it spreads evenly over your face. You only need a very small amount (slightly larger than pea size) which is always a bonus but is that enough to make me like the product? No. I kind of don’t see the point to it. If you’re primer works anyway then why do you need this? It doesn’t add anything extra so for me, you’d be better just sticking to your primer in this case.

I hate that I’m saying this because I love Benefit, but this one gets a big fat no from me I’m afraid. At €31 it’s not cheap and there are much better ways to spend your money in my opinion.

Have any of you tried this? If so I’d love to hear how you got on because I’ve heard so many positive things about it, but I don’t get it. I really wanted to, but I just don’t.

Upcoming Beauty Reviews

Things have been very busy over the past couple of weeks so I haven’t got nearly as many beauty reviews written as I would have liked. But I’ve been trying out lots of new products and I’m excited to share all my thoughts on them with you.

There will be full reviews up on all these products shortly but here’s a sneak peak into what I’ve been putting to the test:

Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette

A few weeks ago I bought the UD Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette and it is amazing. There are a great mix of colours, lots of soft nude and brown shades, combined with a few very strong shades like blue, burgundy and black.

I’m a massive fan of UD palettes in general so I was really excited to get this, and so far it’s is looking like a good all-rounder. Keep an eye out for some of my makeup looks using this palette which will be live next week.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream

Okay so I’ve read loads of reviews of Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream and I was expecting wondrous, ‘magic’ results. Like, it’s nice and all but it hasn’t worked any magic on me so far. And the biggest question I’m asking is, is it worth the €90 price tag? I’m not convinced so far. I’m worried this is all hype and no substance…

But, I’ve only tried it a couple of times so in the interest of fairness, I’m going to give this another week or two before I share a full, detailed review.

Benefit POREfessional Matte Rescue Gel

I really love Benefit primers and their ‘That Gal’ offering has been a staple in my makeup bag for years. I also like their POREfessional offering, so when they released this mattifying gel in January, I instantly added it to my wish list.

I have dry skin, well maybe normal to dry, so I don’t suffer with excess oil on my face. I do however like most people, experience some shine in the afternoons around my T-Zone area. I’ve read that this does wonders for keeping shine at bay so I’ll keep you posted on my thoughts once I’ve given it a proper go.

Urban Decay Ink For Eyes Felt Tip Eyeliner Pen

For those of you who read a lot of my beauty posts, you’ll know that I’m a big fan of MAC eyeliners. I use their Penultimate Eyeliner Pen as my every day eyeliner, and their Fluidline pot for a more dramatic look.

Because I’ve been using these for so long, I got a bit lazy about trying other market alternatives so when I was in Urban Decay a few weeks ago, I decided to try their version of a felt tip eyeliner pen, Ink for Eyes.

It’s super easy to use, I’m really liking it so far. The only downside I’ve noticed is that it does start to dry quite quickly on application so I’ll be watching it over the next while and will report back soon.

I will get full blog posts on each of these products up over the next week or two, I promise!

In the meantime, have you tried any of these? If so I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Going to the Dark Side

Last Saturday I went out with the girls for a late lunch / early dinner / cocktails kind of night. As we were meeting early I didn’t want to go too heavy with my makeup but I wanted it to be strong enough to last from day into night.  I love a dramatic lip so decided to pair a soft brown smokey eye with one of my favourite lip colours, Dark Side by MAC.

This lipstick is a really creamy shade of burgundy with a gloss finish, and is the perfect night time companion to help you pull off a dramatic makeup look.

Using a combination of my usual go-to products, Bobbi Brown eyeshadows and my Dark Side lippy, here’s a look at how I put it together…

After applying my brow pencil and shaping my eyebrows, I started off my covering my eye lids with Benefit’s Passion Pearl highlighter eyeshadow to give my eyes a good base. I then applied even amounts of Bobbi Brown’s Rose Gold and Fawn shimmer eyeshadows to give a soft golden brown colour. By blending these two shades together, it meant that the colour wasn’t too dark for day time.

The look was completed by applying a thin layer of eyeliner to my upper eyelid, then some kohl eyeliner pencil to the waterline of my lower eyelid for that added punch.

Once my eyes were finished, I dusted some powder over my entire face to brush away any eyeshadow residue, and applied Benefit’s Coralista Blusher to my cheekbones in upward movements, ensuring I highlighted as I went along.

To finish off the look, I took out the star of the show, my Dark Side lippy and applied onto my lips. This colour is just perfect in my view, I love rich shades and this shade of burgundy works in both winter and summer.

You can never underestimate the power that a dark or dramatic lip colour has to totally transform your makeup. I don’t tend to pair dark lips with dark eyes often as I think it’s always best to focus on one or the other. There is a happy medium however, and I hope I’ve found that here! I think I have, and hopefully you’ll all like it too!

Here’s a full list of all the products I used:

  • MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation (NW25)
  • MAC Studio Fix Power (C35)
  • Charlotte Tilbury Retoucher Concealer Pen (Shade 2)
  • Benefit Blush (Coralista)
  • MAC Brow Pencil (Spiked)
  • Benefit Eyeshadow Highlighter (Passion Pearl)
  • Bobbi Brown Shimmer Wash Eyeshadow (Rose Gold)
  • Bobbi Brown Shimmer Wash Eyeshadow (Fawn)
  • MAC Fluidline Eyeliner Pot (Black)
  • MAC Kohl Pencil (Smoulder)
  • Benefit ‘They’re Real’ Mascara
  • MAC Lipstick (Dark Side)

I love any excuse to play around with different makeup looks and what could be better than a girls night out. My makeup lasted well into the early hours and apart from touching up my lips after dinner, I didn’t need to touch up at all!

Do you like a dark lip? If so, then why not have a go at this look yourself?

February Wish List

Like many of you I’m sure, I’m always creating lists of things I like. I have lists for all my favourite things and lists of things I want; books, beauty products, clothes, accessories, shoes glorious shoes, and anything else you can possibly think of. I don’t know about you, but any time I read about something that intrigues me, or I see something I want to buy, it goes on my wish list.

Here’s a look at the top five things I’m lusting after this month:

Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Lipsticks

Okay, there’s no two ways about it, I’m frickin’ excited to try out this whole collection, especially the new lipstick range. I love a strong lip and each of the shades in this collection are right up my street. I’m particularly excited to try out shade 714 which is a bright red colour, and the only lippy in Urban Decay’s new ‘Mega Matte’ formula.

Zara Oversized Zinc & Steel Earrings

I don’t know how many pairs of big earrings I own but they are a secret love of mine. I think statement earrings and neckpieces are a must in any wardrobe, and this month I have my eye on these zinc and steel babies from Zara. It’s love.

Benefit POREfessional Matte Rescue Gel

I don’t really have oily skin but do find that as the day goes on I can tend to get a little shinier. I’m a big fan of Benefit products, their That Gal primer is a constant in my makeup bag, so I’m looking forward to trying this out and putting it to the test.

Year of Yes

Ah Shonda Rhimes, the creator of several of my favourite TV shows, most notably Grey’s Anatomy. Shonda recently released this new book, Year of Yes, which I’m dying to read. It tells the story about how when she started saying yes to things more often, her life changed dramatically for the better. This one will also be on my February book list which I will be sharing with you all shortly.

Saint Laurent Espadrilles

I’ve had my eye on these fab studded espadrilles from Saint Laurent for quite a while now and this month I’m going to make sure they are mine! Perfect for the warmer weather that will be coming our way soon (we hope).

So there you go! What’s on your wish list this month?

Today’s Look: Denim on Denim

My work attire is relaxed, I work in a big company where the atmosphere is chilled out and there is an emphasis on casual clothing.

My staple work look is a pair of skinny jeans, ankle boots, and a top of some sort. As it doesn’t change much day-to-day, I try to mix it up with changing hair styles and accessories. My make up is usually soft and natural, keeping with neutral tones, simple eyeliner and soft lips.

For today’s look I’ve gone for casual denim on denim, a high hair bun, ankle boots and soft make up with a tinted lip.

My Outfit

  • Denim Jeans: Zara
  • Oversized Denim Shirt: Penneys
  • Ankle Boots: Janella Bone Nubuck Boots from ALDO
  • Jewellery: Gorjana Taner Bar Necklace from Loulerie

My Make Up

  • Benefit That Gal Primer
  • MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation
  • Benefit Erase Paste Concealer
  • MAC Studio Fix Powder
  • MAC Brow Pencil in Spiked
  • MAC Penultimate Eyeliner in Rapid Black
  • Benefit ‘Coralista’ Blusher
  • Benefit Bad Gal Lash Mascara
  • MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencil ‘Revved Up’ from the new Ellie Goulding collection (I just bought this and I am loovvving it!)

Have a nice day all…
