Simply Lippy Challenge Day 354 | essence Made To Sparkle Velvet Metallic Liquid Lipstick in Shade 02, Get Some Sparkle On!

After the disaster that was yesterday’s metallic lip, I wasn’t sure whether to risk this one today, but in the interests of trying out everything for my challenge, I took the plunge and tried out this metallic offering from essence.

In total contrast to the glitter formula yesterday, this to me, is what a metallic lipstick should be. Plus, it’s around a third of the price of yesterday’s Too Faced counterpart.

essence, as I’m sure many of you already know, is a budget beauty brand and their products can sometimes be hit or miss. But when it comes to this metallic liquid lip, they have knocked it right out of the park in my opinion!

The pigment is absolutely incredible and looks exactly how a metal-finish shade should. The rich bronze tone is lovely, and I think it may be one of the best metallic finishes I’ve tried throughout the whole year.

The formula is wet as it’s a liquid lip so there’s no moisturising or hydrating element to it, but, I didn’t find it too drying to wear for the most part.

It dries in to give a matte finish which means the staying power is pretty good, and though it was maybe a little too bold for a day in the office, it would be a gorgeous lip choice for a festive night out on the tiles.

I like the warm tone of this and definitely think I’ll wear it again. It just goes to show that sometimes, budget brands are just as good, if not better, than some of their high end counterparts.

What do you think of metallic lips, are you a fan?

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 348 | essence Vibrant Shock Lip Paint in Shade 04, Twisted Sister

Today’s lipstick choice is not going to be for everyone, this one is bold and bright, and a little bit neon too! It’s not usually a lippy I would choose for a day in the office, but I was intrigued to see if the pigment was as bright on my lips as it looked in the tube and so I decided to try it out today.

Not only is the colour neon bright, but as soon as I applied it I got a great colour pay off and the pigment was very good too. The colour looks just as bright on, and it may even have been a little too bright – even for me.

This is the kind of shade that would be amazing on a Summer holiday; I don’t know about you but I love wearing bright colours when I’m away. However, I’m just not sure that it was very fitting for a cold December day. Although, it definitely brightened up makeup that’s for sure.

The formula is quite wet when you initially apply it, and it does take a few minutes to dry in. There is a little dragging because of that and if you want to layer it, you do need to let it dry in before you do in order to get a good, full coverage.

It wouldn’t be my favourite lipstick as it’s not quite matte and not quite cream either. However, I did love the brightness of the shade and look forward to trying it out when sunnier weather comes around again!

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 302 | Essence Ultra Last Instant Colour Lipstick in Shade 08, Eternal Beauty

When it comes to essence products, for me their lipsticks really aren’t too bad for a budget brand. Of all that I’ve tried so far, I’ve been pretty impressed by most of them and some I would definitely wear again. But today’s shade, I think is my favourite of them all.

The shade itself is a very subtle rose, made all the more subtle by the slightly sheer cream-gloss finish. When I first applied it, I loved how it just glided on and blended in, and it had a nice smooth texture to it also.

It’s not thick or luxuriously creamy, but there is just enough moisturisation to make your lips feel soft while you wear it, and the pigment wasn’t bad for the finish either.

When it comes to staying power, I’ve definitely tried better; you aren’t going to get hours out of this lipstick. But actually, I kind of liked that because I was in the mood for something very soft and subtle, and this almost felt more like a tinted balm, albeit not as hydrating.

I think shades like this are perfect for when you want a carefree, natural makeup day and I think that’s what I liked most about this. It is pigmented enough to lift the lips, but understated and soft for a relaxed Sunday afternoon.

Have any of you tried Essence’ lippies? I’d love to hear what you think too!

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 278 | Essence Matte Matte Matte Long Lasting Lip Gloss in Shade 08, The Big Chill

As budget brands go, essence is one that I haven’t used very much of. Some things I’ve tried from the brand haven’t been great, while others have really surprised me like today’s lipstick choice from their Matte, Matte, Matte range.

So far in my challenge, I have tried out two of their Shine, Shine, Shine glosses, and while I was liked both the formula and pigment, as a lip product they wouldn’t be my go-to choice. However, this matte offering today, definitely could become a go-to.

The pigment firstly, is very good giving a full opaque coverage to the lips when you apply it and the deep brown-rose shade is the perfect autumnal shade to get you through the next few months.

The consistency is quite thick but very blendable, and surprisingly, doesn’t drag or pull on application. The application itself is made so much easier with the short angled brush head which allows you to get a very even coverage too.

Aside from consistency, I couldn’t get over how well this stayed put on my lips today; it really held its own against some of my favourite matte formulas. Now, it’s not hydrating or moisturising so don’t be expecting any real creamy goodness, but it didn’t dry out my lips at all, and the vanilla scent was a welcome suprise also.

Everything about this lippy is pretty damn good when you consider the very budget friendly price point, and yet again I have been surprised by how good some budget lippies can be.

Because I was working today, I paired this with my very simple office makeup look, but it could also look amazing paired with a brown or warm smokey eye.

Have you tried any essence products?

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 189 | Essence Glossy Stick Lip Colour in Shade 03, Luminous Rosewood

Essence is probably one of the most affordable brands, if not the most affordable, that I have tried so far throughout my challenge. It is a budget brand that I’ve never thought much of before now if I’m honest, but it has already surprised me a couple of times, no more so than with today’s lippy.

I didn’t have high hopes for this glossy lip crayon, and maybe that’s why it has exceeded my expectations, but it is pretty good and let me tell you why…

The crayon itself is slim but just thick enough to allow for an easy and precise application. It is very blendable due to the soft creamy formula, and blends WAY better than I thought it would.

The pigment is very good giving a nice pop of colour, and you can easily layer it with no dragging or pulling because of its smooth texture, which also leaves your lips feeling lovely and smooth on application.

I wouldn’t say it is hydrating, but it does feel quite moisturising and definitely didn’t dry out my lips at all, which I really thought it might.

I was honestly just so impressed by this in so many ways; it has many of the elements I would expect from a higher end product, and I got some great compliments on it throughout the day too which is always a bonus.

It’s a budget lippy so it’s never going to compare to YSL or another high end fav, but, I really love when a product surprises me, and this one definitely did that in spades. Oh, and I just loved the rose shade too…

Have any of you tried this? Because I would really love to hear if it impressed you as much as it did me!

Simply Lippy Challenge Day 184 | Essence Sheer & Shine Lipstick in Shade 12, Candy Love

Up until my challenge, I had never tried any Essence products before; I’m it really sure why but it just never really crossed my mind as a brand I wanted to try.

However, the one thing I want from my challenge is to have a completely diverse range of lippies from very high end to budget bargain and everything in between, so I bought a few of their lippies and decided to put them to the test.

The first one I tried was one of their shine lip glosses, which wasn’t half bad and today’s lippy, is my second one to try out and I have to say, it’s not half bad either.

The formula is much creamier than I expected it to be so it felt nice on application and blended well on the lips. However, I didn’t find the pigment great and had to layer it up to get any real colour at all.

In saying that, the light pigment could be more to do with the fact that it was a pale shade so I’d definitely be interested to see if any of the bolder shades have a better pigment.

From the actual lipstick itself, I was expecting it to be a deep rose shade, but it was more of a pale pink which I’m not a big fan of in general. Because of that, I don’t think I was going to love it either way. Plus, sheer finishes don’t tend to be my preference either.

I did find it nice on my lips, it was smooth in consistency and did have a lovely soft feel to it, so it’s definitely not a bad option a budget lipsticks go.

I wouldn’t say this was a bad lipstick, it was actually fine, but it just didn’t do much for me and left me feeling just a bit ‘meh’.

Happy 100 Simply Lippy Days… To Me!

Well, if you caught my Day 100 lippy post which I posted a little while ago, you will know that the big day has arrived. Yes, today I reached the 100 day mark of my 365 day Simply Lippy challenge and I’m so excited!

I’m not going to lie, there were days over the past three months or so, where I really hit a wall with the challenge and didn’t think I could keep going. It’s tough doing a daily challenge – I wake up in the morning, take product shots and makeup photos, go to work for ten or so hours, then come home, write my blog post, edit my photos, then share my posts online and on social media. It really is a full time job, on top of a full time job!

In saying all that, I honestly have really loved it, and though I had a brief moment of wanting to quit, I’ve decided to keep going and see if I can make the 365 day mark. I’m running very low on lipsticks, and I’ve a long way to go still, but where there’s a will, there’s a way as the old saying goes…

Over the past few days, I’ve been looking back at all my posts to-date, and I can’t believe how many shades, brands, and formula’s I’ve tried. From high end to budget, from matte to gloss, from liquid to cream; I’ve tried them all! But a lipstick lover’s job is never really done, and there are a lot more for me to try still.

Of course I’ve had some favourites, and some least favourites, but instead of sharing them here, I’m going to do a round up video of my first 100 days seen as I haven’t got around to doing that before now.

In the meantime, here’s a look back at all the shades I’ve worn over the past 100 days…
