Going to the Dark Side

Last Saturday I went out with the girls for a late lunch / early dinner / cocktails kind of night. As we were meeting early I didn’t want to go too heavy with my makeup but I wanted it to be strong enough to last from day into night.  I love a dramatic lip so decided to pair a soft brown smokey eye with one of my favourite lip colours, Dark Side by MAC.

This lipstick is a really creamy shade of burgundy with a gloss finish, and is the perfect night time companion to help you pull off a dramatic makeup look.

Using a combination of my usual go-to products, Bobbi Brown eyeshadows and my Dark Side lippy, here’s a look at how I put it together…

After applying my brow pencil and shaping my eyebrows, I started off my covering my eye lids with Benefit’s Passion Pearl highlighter eyeshadow to give my eyes a good base. I then applied even amounts of Bobbi Brown’s Rose Gold and Fawn shimmer eyeshadows to give a soft golden brown colour. By blending these two shades together, it meant that the colour wasn’t too dark for day time.

The look was completed by applying a thin layer of eyeliner to my upper eyelid, then some kohl eyeliner pencil to the waterline of my lower eyelid for that added punch.

Once my eyes were finished, I dusted some powder over my entire face to brush away any eyeshadow residue, and applied Benefit’s Coralista Blusher to my cheekbones in upward movements, ensuring I highlighted as I went along.

To finish off the look, I took out the star of the show, my Dark Side lippy and applied onto my lips. This colour is just perfect in my view, I love rich shades and this shade of burgundy works in both winter and summer.

You can never underestimate the power that a dark or dramatic lip colour has to totally transform your makeup. I don’t tend to pair dark lips with dark eyes often as I think it’s always best to focus on one or the other. There is a happy medium however, and I hope I’ve found that here! I think I have, and hopefully you’ll all like it too!

Here’s a full list of all the products I used:

  • MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation (NW25)
  • MAC Studio Fix Power (C35)
  • Charlotte Tilbury Retoucher Concealer Pen (Shade 2)
  • Benefit Blush (Coralista)
  • MAC Brow Pencil (Spiked)
  • Benefit Eyeshadow Highlighter (Passion Pearl)
  • Bobbi Brown Shimmer Wash Eyeshadow (Rose Gold)
  • Bobbi Brown Shimmer Wash Eyeshadow (Fawn)
  • MAC Fluidline Eyeliner Pot (Black)
  • MAC Kohl Pencil (Smoulder)
  • Benefit ‘They’re Real’ Mascara
  • MAC Lipstick (Dark Side)

I love any excuse to play around with different makeup looks and what could be better than a girls night out. My makeup lasted well into the early hours and apart from touching up my lips after dinner, I didn’t need to touch up at all!

Do you like a dark lip? If so, then why not have a go at this look yourself?

Brunch Time: Union Café

This weekend was all about brunch for me, so much so, I went to the same place on Saturday AND Sunday. Who does that?… Anyone?! The place in question was the new Union Café in Mount Merrion which I have heard a lot of great things about over the past few weeks, but with our wedding and Christmas I just hadn’t got around to trying it.

Yesterday was the day I finally got to give it a go when I met with two of my oldest friends for a good old fashioned girly catch up. Unfortunately they hadn’t been able to make the wedding, and one of them also just had a baby, so needless to say we had a LOT to talk about!

The girls were already there when I arrived and had a lovely cosy table with a big couch in the centre of the room. Sometimes when you sit at couches in restaurants I find you sink into them so much it’s hard to eat your meal, but these were so comfy and the perfect height. We ordered some bubbles and began chattering away, eventually realising we had to actually order some food.

The all day brunch menu has a great selection, but as we met later in the day, we decided to opt for salads rather than breakfast. I ordered the Dundrum Bay Crab Salad and the girls ordered the Rotisserie Free Range Chicken. The portion sizes were large so we took our time eating in between sipping our drinks and catching up on all our news. My salad was lovely and fresh, and the crab was particularly tasty too. The girls had nothing but good things to say about their choices also.

Although it was very busy when we were there, we didn’t really notice which is always good sign and the atmosphere was very relaxed. After a good two hours, we said our goodbyes, but having seen the breakfast menu, I was excited to be revisiting this morning with one of my besties.

When I arrived at 10.30am, it was very quiet but the lovely atmosphere still remained. I ordered a cuppa and perused the menu until my friend arrived a few minutes later. This time I went for the Bacon and Eggs which was delicious (if not a little bold), but so reasonably priced for the portion size. Once again, we were left to sit and relax with no interruptions, ordering another round of coffees two hours in.

All in all, I really enjoyed both experiences here and will definitely be back for brunch again soon. I’m also looking forward to trying out their dinner menu. Unfortunately one friend of mine did have a bad experience here a little while ago, but I’m hoping that was just a once off and that the high standard I experienced will continue.

Only time will tell…

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

It’s almost the weekend, and I’m very excited because this weekend I’m heading away for my lovely friend Nikki’s hen party. Whoop! I can’t disclose any information as yet – it’s all a very top secret surprise for the bride-to-be. But it’s going to be GREAT.

If you’ve read some of my earlier posts, you’ll know that one of my big resolutions for 2016 is to go to places I’ve never been before, and this trip will be my first destination. Although I won’t be sharing it with my new hubbie, I love nothing more than a good girly night away, and what better reason for a girls night than to give our fab friend a spectacular send off into married life. That, combined with the fact that I haven’t had a night out since the wedding, means this is set to be one hell of a party!

I promise to fill you in when I get back, and while I’ll be keeping the weekend’s antics to myself, I will be sharing my first travel review of the year. If you can’t wait until then though, remember you can always head over to my Instagram where I’ll be sharing lots of lovely details over the next few days.

Until then, happy weekend! Cluck, Cluck…
