Rome In Oufits

So those of you who’ve read any of my travel posts on our trip to Rome last week, will already know how much I loved it. It’s definitely become one of my favourite places and I’m already excited for the day that I can return, whenever that may be.

I love a good city break and usually tend to do city breaks in the Autumn or Spring so that the weather isn’t too hot and uncomfortable for sightseeing in the midday heat. But this time we decided to shake things up a bit, and booked our trip to Rome for Summer.

For those of you who don’t know, Rome in summer is scorching hot. We arrived to 29 degree heat and it was just gorgeous. Don’t you just love that feeling of heat on your face as you look up to the sky when you’re away somewhere warm?! I do. But with hot, sunny days also comes the obstacle of what outfits to wear that can allow you be tourists without sweating ridiculously and losing any sense of style you might otherwise have had.

Now while I’m not the world’s most stylish fashionista, I love clothes, I love shoes and I love accessories, like most girls do. I know what I like, I think I have fairly okay taste, and I’m a sucker for a mix of high street and designer pieces that can lift an outfit to another level. But let’s be real here, I’m no Kate Moss!

But getting back to Rome… I wanted to make sure I could do everything I wanted to do in the heat, while keeping a little bit of style in the mix too so I deliberated long and hard about what to bring with me to wear. I planned each outfit meticulously, and I’m happy to say although it was roasting, I think my outfits worked out pretty well…

Day to night look – This look was the perfect day to night outfit for a big city like Rome where you spend the day sightseeing but stop off in cafes along the way for a glass of wine and bite to eat. In the evenings it got a bit chilly so my trusty denim shirt was the perfect accompaniment to this maxi dress.

Dress: ZARA, Shirt: H&M Denim Shirt, Bag: DVF Mini, Shoes: ALDO

Ancient Adventures – I got this dress last Summer and it’s just so comfortable to wear. It’s cotton and very lightweight so was just what I needed for a day wandering around the Colosseum and Roman Forum in 28 degree heat.

Dress: H&M, Bag: DVF, Shoes: ALDO

Strapless Sundays – The Sunday of our trip was the hottest by far, the sun was splitting the stones and it was a roasting 30 degrees. To avoid getting tan lines I opted for this old strapless black top and paired it with these super baggy, printed hareem pants.

Top: H&M, Trousers: M&S Printed Hareem Pants, Bag: DVF, Shoes: ALDO

Dinner Date – I opted for casual dinner outfits, I would usually dress up more and at least put on a pair of heels when going out for dinner on holiday, but as you walk everywhere in Rome I decided to go for comfort over height! I got this stripy skirt in New York a few years ago and it’s become one of my favourite travel accessories. It’s so easy to wear and works both dressed up and dressed down.

Top: H&M, Skirt: Cotton On

Maxi Monday – For our last day I opted for this cute maxi skirt which some of you may have seen me wear in Ibiza. For this look, I paired it with a casual t-shirt, making it very lightweight and perfect for wandering the beautiful cobble streets while slurping a gelato!

Top: ZARA Basic Tee, Skirt: Penneys (Primark)

Gladiators in the home of the Gladiators – I don’t think any Summer trip to Rome would be complete without a pair of Gladiator sandals. The one thing I definitely recommend for sightseeing in the heat is to wear very light, but comfortable shoes. On the first day I wore leather runners and it was so warm that I ended up getting blisters on my feet. So for the rest of the trip it was sandals all the way.

Shoes: ZARA Silver Gladiators

If you’re going off adventuring anywhere warm this summer and you won’t be spending your time lying by a beach or pool, then maybe these outfits will give you a little inspiration on what to wear for your adventures…

My next trip away for our Year of the Holiday is to Spain with some of our close friends next month. So I better go start planning those outfits now!

My Holiday Beauty & Accessory Essentials

Well holiday day has finally arrived, yay! As you’ll know if you’ve been reading my recent posts, I’ve been planning for this trip for quite a while now between trying to be healthy and losing some weight, to planning each outfit meticulously in order to be party ready.I’ve never been to Ibiza before and have heard so many great things about the old town where we are staying, not to mention some of the incredible sunsets I’ve seen pictures of on Instagram. I’m pretty sure every evening we’ll be found in one sunset bar or another sipping cocktails while watching the sun go down.

When I get home from my trip next week I’ll share some of my outfit and makeup looks with you, but for this post I thought I’d share some of my beauty and accessory must haves for my holidays and what I’m bringing with me:

PARASOL SPF Sun Lotion – Obviously the most important thing when going away to somewhere hot is having good UV protection.  I use Parasol Sun Care and have done for several years now. It’s an Irish brand so apart from supporting Irish, it’s the best sun lotion I’ve used. What’s more, you only need to apply it once a day, what more could you want?!

For my face I usually use a brand called Heliocare as it’s the best I’ve come across for face protection. However, I’ve read a lot of good things about this La Roche-Posay Anthelios face cream so for this trip I decided to try it out. I’m using SPF 30 so I’ll keep you posted on what it’s like.

Apart from face protection, I always buy separate lip protection too as I have very sensitive lips that tend to burn easily. The one I use a lot is this SPF 30 Lip Protection balm from the Boots Soltan range. It has great lasting power (even if you are sweating in the heat!) and doesn’t taste bad on your lips either like some other lip SPFs that I’ve tried.

The Nivea Soothing Aftersun lotion is by far my favourite aftersun. It contains Aloe Vera, has a lovely creamy consistency and is super hydrating for the skin after a day lying in the sun.

I have thick, curly hair and because of that, my hair is prone to getting very dry in the heat. I came across this Heat Defense spray from TRESemmé last summer. I was surprised to find that it kept my hair nourished and shiny so needless to say it’s going in my wash bag again this year.

I’m a big fan of Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream, I think it’s safe to say most beauty lovers are. I always have it in my handbag, and it’s great on holiday to relieve any insect bites or sunburn.

To remove my makeup at night, I’m bringing the new Garner Express 2 in 1 Make Up Remover. I haven’t tried it before but have read good reviews, plus it’s mini size so it’s perfect for travelling. I’ll keep you posted on what I think of it.

As mentioned above, my lips can get very dry in the sun so I’m bringing my Elemis Lip Revive balm to keep my lips soft. I use Eight Hour Cream on my lips too, but as the Elemis balm is also mini size, it’s a handy one for the handbag in the evening!

My Dr. Obagi Oclipse Sunscreen & Primer is what I wear on my face everyday. I am so particular about my skincare routine and use all Dr. Obagi products which I may have mentioned before. This primer is SPF 30 and is also tinted so great for holidays when you don’t want to wear makeup during the day.

Lipstick, oh lipstick. My favourite! Many of you will already know that I’m obsessed with lipsticks, they are just my ‘thing’. In fact, on occasion I have been known to pick the lipstick colour before the outfit. Does anyone else do that?!

Anyway, I’ve packed three of my favourite lipsticks, MAC Lady Danger, MAC Love Goddess (from the Marilyn Monroe collection), and YSL Le Orange. I also got a new lipstick for my trip called Relentlessly Red from MAC’s Retro Matte lipstick collection. This shade is literally my dream, I honestly don’t know how I haven’t come across it before now but I’m very excited to try it out. Can you tell I love orange and coral shades by the way?!

Every trip to the sun requires a pair or two of cute sandals but if I’m being honest I’ve actually packed five pairs, not just the two in this photo. I’m only going for five days so I know, it’s ridiculous. I know. But I just couldn’t resist, you’ll never know when you might need them, right?!

These two pairs are from Penneys and New Look, and apart from being very inexpensive, they are very comfortable too.

I’m an accessories girl at heart and as mentioned before, the theme for this trip away is Boho Chic. I’m a sucker for statement neck and head pieces, and there are so many great accessories on trend for this summer. I’m particularly loving H&M’s Coachella collection which is where the neck piece and floral head bands are from.

DVF. Need I say more? My DVF cross body mini bags are life! Big enough to fit all your essentials, small enough to throw across your body and go. My black one comes pretty much everywhere with me, and my bright coral one is a must for any trip to the sun.

Lastly, I’m taking these amazing body tattoos which I picked up from the H&M Coachella collection also. The little stars are super cute and will be a great addition to my Boho theme. My sunglasses are from H&M and Penneys.

Before you say it, I know, I’m bringing quite a lot of stuff for a five day trip. And that’s not even half of it. I’ve always had a tendency to overpack and I’m sure this time is no different, eeek! But what the hell, better to be safe than sorry.

Ibiza here we come…

My Top 12 Summer Holiday Buys

I know I may have mentioned it once or twice already but, I’m off to Ibiza on Thursday, yippeee! As you can tell I’m very excited, mainly because I’ve never been to Ibiza before, but also because I can’t wait for a bit of sunshine and to spend a few days away with my siblings. It’s been forever since we’ve done something like this so I’m really looking forward to it.

Anyway, if you read my post on Boho Holiday Outfits last week, you’ll know that the theme for the weekend is Boho Chic. Why a theme I hear you ask?! Well one of my sisters is celebrating her birthday over there so we’ve got lots of great events and parties lined up which in turn means lots of great outfits have to be planned.

My outfits are slowly starting to come together, thankfully made easier by the fact that there are just such great things in the shops at the moment. From accessories, to sandals, to dresses, even to fab holiday makeup, I had to drag myself away from so many things I wanted to buy.

That’s not to say that I won’t buy them at some stage though, every girl needs a wish list in my opinion so here’s a look at what’s on my summer wish list, and my Top 12 Holiday Buys for this summer…

Rust Maxi Dress H&MDenim Jumpsuit H&M

Gold Gladiator Sandals River Island / Straw Bag H&M / Holly Sandals Michael Kors

Floral Print Jumpsuit ASOS / Printed Floral Midi ZARA

The Shore Bondi Rose Sunglasses SHEVOKE / Cosmetics Bag ASOS

Field of Dreams Sundress Seafolly / Tropical Trikini Swimsuit ZARA

So there you go, just some of the things I’m lusting after this holiday season. Now all I need is to get bikini ready so I can wear and buy them. While that’s not going to happen for my Ibiza trip given it’s only two days away, I’m keeping them on my list for a holiday coming up later in the year.

Also, if you’re a complete social media addict like me then you might be interested in this fab Ban.do back up phone charger I recently bought from one of my favourite online shops, Hippenings.com. It’s the perfect summer accessory if you plan on being snap-happy on holiday just like me!

Paris, Oui

So this Thursday myself and the hubby are off to lovely Paris, and I’m so frickin’ excited! While up to now the Year of the Holiday has only brought us to places in Ireland, finally we are managing to get further afield.

We’ve both been to Paris before but not together, and there’s so much I want to see and do. The only thing scuppering the trip at the moment is the fact that I’m smothering with a cold, and I am unable to wear shoes as I split my ankle open. Long story but I’ve basically been living in my flip flops for the past week (resulting in said cold!).

But in keeping with my focus on being positive this year, I’m not going to let any of those obstacles stop me. It’s been many years since I was last in Paris, and I didn’t really see much at all, so I’ve got a lot on my list this time around.

We have three days and four nights so I’m calling on all my lovely readers to send me some tips on what to do, where to go, where to eat, drink etc. I have all the obvious places on my list, but I’m looking for recommendations for non-touristy, quirky, out of the ordinary type of places.

So if you’ve been to Paris over the last few years and found any little hidden gems then please let me know so I can add them to my list.

I’ll be taking you all with me via snapchat and Instagram so make sure you come follow me over there to see what we’re up to. I’ll share a full post on our trip when I’m back next week also.

For now, au revoir!

Alexa Lovin’

Handbags. Do I even need to go on? I don’t think there are many women out there who don’t love a pretty handbag and I’m no exception.

Depending on my mood I flit between oversize and mini, satchel and clutch, cross-body and over the shoulder, you name it – I’ve probably got a bag that fits your description!

I do, like all things, have my favourites however, and today that’s my Mulberry Alexa. It’s been a while since I’ve given my Alexa some love, but a friend of mine was recently talking about purchasing one for herself which made me realise, I hadn’t taken mine out to play in quite a while.

I bought this bag about five years ago now, and it is like my baby. I lusted after it for so long and when it finally became mine, my handbag life was complete (well for a while anyway!).

This is probably the most versatile bag I’ve ever had, as I’m sure all of you Alexa lovers out there would agree. The tan colour means it goes with pretty much everything I own, and the leather has worn incredibly well over the years, remaining as soft as it was when I first purchased it. It’s love what can I say…

And on that note, Alexa and I are off out, so Happy Friday. Hope it’s a great weekend all!

Retail Therapy

Today I woke up feeling a bit ‘meh’. I had loads of jobs to do, my sister is coming home with my nieces this evening for a long weekend, but still when I woke this morning I just felt meh. I have days like this as we all do, and I had a particularly stressful day in work yesterday so I’m sure that didn’t help.

I needed a pick me up, something to distract me, and then I realised yesterday was pay day. Score! So I decided to take a trip to the shops and see what I could treat myself to.

I have been on the hunt for a pair of studded Saint Laurent espadrilles for quite some time now but they are sold out EVERYWHERE! Much to my disappointment, even though I had given myself permission to buy them this month, I can’t get my hands on them. So when I came across these little Michael Kors babies my inner fashionista did a jump for joy. Two legs kicking in the air kind of jump for joy!

Although they aren’t the same, they come pretty close. The top toe part of the shoe is a black leather, and the back half is a kind of silvery metallic leather. They are super comfortable (well what I have worn of them so far), and they didn’t have the steep price tag of Saint Laurent either.

I now feel giddy and excited to take my new shoes out for a stroll. And even picked up as few bits in ZARA too as you do.

Morale of the story? Never underestimate the power of retail therapy when you’re feeling a bit meh!

Oh Crêpe! It’s Pancake Tuesday

It’s Pancake Tuesday and I came across this picture on Pinterest earlier today…

…it made me giggle like many images I come across on Pinterest and other social networking sites daily, and today I just had to share it.

We’re more of a crêpe family, none of your typical thick style pancakes here. We like them thin, a little bit crispy on the outside, and smeared with butter, lemon and sugar. All the bads!

Using Mamma’s secret crêpe recipe, in other words the same crêpe recipe that you all probably have too, here’s a look at how Pancake Tuesday went down in our house this evening…

A mug of flour sieved, an egg in the center, a dash of milk, a good old whisk and voila – a frothy pancake mix.

I’m sure you’re all sitting down enjoying your pancakes (or crêpes) now, so from my family to yours – enjoy!

10 Random Facts About Me

I was recently challenged to post ten random facts about myself over on Instagram by the lovely Jean at A Spoonful of Travel blog. I love these kinds of challenges, I recently heard them being referred to as ‘Pop Up’ challenges which I think is a great explanation, and they are a great way of getting to know your fellow bloggers.

At first I didn’t know what to write, it’s hard to think of ten things off hand but eventually I got there and thought why not share them with you all here too. So here it goes…

1 – I’m 32, Irish and living in Dublin

Most of you, if you’ve been reading my blog up to now, will know this already. I’m a Dublin girl born and bread, and there’s no better city in the world if you ask me! 🙂

2 – I recently got married and wish I was still planning my wedding

Oh to be wedding planning still… But yesterday I got to have a look at one of my wedding photos from our photographer for the first time and it has made me super excited to see the rest. I’ve written a full post on our wedding photography which I’ll be sharing with you all shortly too so watch this space.

3 – My favourite book is To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Atticus Finch, need I say more? Other than if you haven’t already read this book, you are missing out on possibly one of the best books ever written in my opinion. This one is sure to go down in literary history.

4 – I work as an Internal Communications specialist for a large international company

My job is busy, challenging and can be stressful at times like most jobs, but I get to do one of the things I love most everyday which is writing. And I love that.

5 – I am hopeless romantic

Flowers, candles, poetry, chocolate, spontaneity, I love it all. The cheesier the better!

6 – My favorite drink is Champagne/Prosecco

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love bubbles. The fact that they are the least calorific drink in the wine family is a major bonus too!

7 – I love to travel and have visited over 20 countries across 5 continents

Travelling is one of my favourites. Although I’ve been lucky enough to travel to lots of different places, I still haven’t visited anywhere near as many countries in Europe as I’d like, I also want to travel all fifty states of America, see South East Asia and snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef.

At the beginning of 2016 I created a list of all the places I’d like to try and see this year so you can have a read of them here.

8 – I meditate regularly and practice mindfulness

As someone who has suffered with anxiety for many years, I have been searching to find something to help me cope when life becomes overwhelming for a long time now. I have always been interested in meditation and have seen first hand the positive impact it can have on people. So last year I began to embrace meditation and haven’t looked back since.

If you’re new to meditation there are some great books to help you get started. My Dad who has been meditating for many years now gave me a great book – Meditation Now or Never by Steve Hagen which I found so helpful at the beginning. There are also some great apps for guided meditation such as ZMeditations which is the one I’m currently using.

9 – I have a BA in Politics & Psychoanalysis, an MA in Politics and a Post Grad Dip in Public Relations & Event Management

I was one of those people who left school not really knowing what I wanted to do, I knew I wanted to write but didn’t know in what capacity. I went down the Politics route with the plan of becoming a journalist, but life works in funny ways and I ended up in Public Relations which later led to my current role in Internal Comms.

10 – My ultimate dream is to write a book

Even if I write it just for myself and it never gets published, I really want to write a book someday. My friend Zarah promised me many years ago she would be the first to buy it when I do so I haven’t forgotten that either!

So there you go…ten random facts about me.

The idea of this challenge is to nominate other bloggers which I’ve done over on my Instagram page if you’d like to check it out. Because of that I won’t nominate anyone specifically now, but I’m putting it out there in the blogosphere and if you decide to take the challenge on then please let me know. I’d love to read about all your random facts too!

Lost In Colouring

When I first heard about the new Adult Colouring Book craze a few months back, it immediately caught my attention. As someone who has suffered with anxiety and stress a lot over the years, I try to practice meditation and mindfulness as much as possible and it has really helped me cope in times when I become overwhelmed. I’ve always been open to things a little bit out there (much to the amusement of my new hubbie!), so when I came across this, I just had to find out more.

I bought my first colouring book, ‘The Mindfulness Colouring Book’ just after Christmas. It describes itself as ‘Anti-stress art therapy for busy people’. I have never been any good at art or drawing, but that doesn’t matter when it comes to colouring, so why not give it a try I thought… A few days later as I was strolling around the bookshop as I tend to do, the fashion lover inside me spotted another two books, The Liberty Colouring Book & Vintage Colouring book and I just couldn’t resist. Three colouring books and a packet of colouring pencils – I was now ready to give this a go.

I took them out over the weekend and started colouring. At first it felt weird, I was immediately transported back in time to my childhood, but all of a sudden a half an hour had passed without me even realising. I was lost in the patterns on the pages, a world away from reality and it felt amazing. For some reason Carrie Bradshaw’s quote ‘When Big colours…he rarely stays inside the lines’ from the SACT Movie kept popping into my head at the same time too. Where did that even come from?! Isn’t it funny how the mind works? But what I then realised, was for that whole half an hour I had a big smile on my face, utterly content in my ‘lostness’.

If that’s how I felt after such a short time on a quiet Sunday afternoon, how would I feel if this became a part of my daily life I wondered? Good I reckon, maybe even great. From now on I will happily get lost colouring anytime, and I’m already thinking about sitting down this evening with my pencils and having some time-out.

Ps. When Dave came home and saw colouring books on the bed, he started laughing out loud for a good minute or two. He said he thought I was joking when I told him I had bought a colouring book! So I’m determined to get him colouring also and see what he thinks then.

I’ll keep you posted on that one… 🙂
