50 Things That Make Me Happy (Part 1)

This week I’ve vowed to start the week off on a positive note in the hope that it will make for a better week than last week. If you read any of my blog posts last week, you’ll know that it was a bit of a tough one for me. I was stressed, I was down, and I was feeling quite overwhelmed by a lot of things going on in my life.

But, as I’m one for optimism and trying to look on the bright side, over the weekend I got thinking about all the things that make me happy. Positivity is an incredible thing really, the moment you start thinking about the good things in your life, the moment you realise there are so many more good things than bad.

As a result of these thoughts, I decided to write a list. This list is by no means exhaustive, there are hundreds upon thousands of things that make me happy every single day. But for the purposes of focusing on the positive, I wrote a list of fifty things that make me happy and decided to share them with you all.

They are in no particular order, and range from small things to big. Some may seem silly, some obvious, but either way, they have made me grateful once again for all the wonderful things in my life. The simplest things make us the happiest, and as the old saying goes, the best things in life are free

  • Sunny days
  • Walks on Dun Laoghaire Pier
  • Sing-songs and Irish music sessions
  • Champagne and all kinds of bubbles
  • My nieces
  • Having a good cry
  • Shopping
  • Curling up in bed early with a great book
  • My family
  • Dancing

  • Tea chats and catch ups with my girls
  • Pizza
  • Date nights with my hubby
  • TV Box Sets (in particular Grey’s Anatomy and Sex and the City)
  • Writing
  • New shoes, and old
  • Big open fires
  • Red wine
  • Sunbathing
  • My friends

  • Surprises (good obviously)
  • Going on holiday
  • Malteasers
  • Having a good political debate
  • Breakfast with my parents
  • 80’s music
  • Cosy slippers
  • Having my nails done
  • London trips with my family
  • Going to a small Irish pub for some craic agus ceoil

  • Girls nights out
  • Old photographs
  • Having a job that I love
  • Social media (is that really sad?!)
  • Cheese
  • Sunny Sunday drinks in beer gardens
  • A good concert / festival
  • Listening to my brother sing
  • Talking on the phone with friends
  • Candles

  • Listening to the rain when I don’t have to go outside
  • Driving
  • Laughing so much it hurts
  • Having a good rant
  • Getting my hair done
  • Buying new makeup
  • Fitting in to old clothes that are now too big for me (I need to get back to that)
  • My wedding video
  • Road trips
  • My hubby

Now that I’ve started I could keep going forever. Because really, life is pretty amazing. Yes some shitty things happen, yes we have bad days, and yes sometimes we wish we could crawl into a hole and never come out. But those times always pass.

So on that note, I hope you all have a great week. Here’s to a better one than last week anyway!

Life Is An Awfully Big Adventure

Yesterday I found my mind drifting, dreaming of sunnier places, new adventures and well, a whole lot more than the mundane ins and outs of every day life. Is it just me, or does anyone else go through times like this?

What I’m beginning to learn about myself is that in times of stress, my initial instinct is just to get away from it all. Anyone can tell you that’s the classic fight or flee reaction that your body has to stress, we all experience it at some point, but for me I think it’s just a little bit more than that.

I often wonder what more life has to offer. And this is not a new development, I have thought like this for as long as I can remember. It’s why I’m so drawn to meditation and positivity and books like The Secret which tell us that there is so much more. I’ve always been searching for more.

Maybe that’s partly the reason Dave and I are going to spend as much of this year as possible travelling to new places, seeing new things, going on new adventures. I have this urge to escape, and experience, and relish, and soak up all the wonderful things the world has to offer.Life is serious so much of the time and I’m at that point where I’m thinking about really settling down. I have a great life, an incredible family, amazing friends, and a wonderful hubby. And I am so grateful for them all, I’d love to take them all on adventures with me!

In so many ways adventure means getting away and doing something new, but when I think about it, really think about it, isn’t all of life just one big adventure? Adventure is found in a variety of experiences; it is travel, it is new and strange places, but it is also wild nights out and cosy nights in, it is change, it is challenges, it is joyous occasions, events and happenings, it is sadness and loss, it is small victories and big; it is life.

Maybe it’s just the grey skies and dull weather making me get lost in my thoughts, maybe it’s just that I’m tired.

Either way, I’m learning that no matter what age I am or what stage of life I’m at, I will always long for adventure, travel and discovery. And I will always make time to search for, and find more.

And maybe that’s not a bad thing.

Fridaygram

I’ve had a very busy week since my last Fridaygram, I had my beautiful friend Julie’s wedding last weekend, I had a crazy week in work, and I started swatching and taking pictures of new products I want to try.

As always, I shared it all on my Instagram, so here’s a look at what’s been going on:

Friday

After getting my nails and spray tan done in prep for the wedding on Saturday, I had a cosy Friday night in with my slippers and a movie. I needed to make sure I got my beauty sleep for the fun ahead on Saturday!

Saturday

My friend Julie is a big fan of Hendrick’s Gin and Tonics, so when I saw our places names at the wedding were miniature bottles of Hendrick’s, I just had to share. Have you ever seen anything so cute?!

I also shared this picture of me and one of my good friends Pam who I hadn’t seen since my own wedding back in December.

Sunday

Julie is all about the details so on Sunday I just had to share some more wedding photos. These Baby’s Breath centrepieces were just stunning and gave the tables such a romantic vibe.

Monday

Always one for positivity, I shred this Monday Motivation picture. There’s no better way to start the week than putting yourself in the right frame of mind (even if it does all fall away after a day or two!).

Tuesday

In case you missed it, on Tuesday I blogged all about our trip to Paris and what the highlights of the trip were for me. This picture was taken of Dave and I on the River Seine and is my favourite picture of our weekend away. I love the Eiffel Tower peeking in the background!

I also shared this picture I came across on Pinterest which I just love. As mentioned above and in many of my blog posts, I love inspirational quotes and images, and this one is just brilliant. Sometimes when you’re having a bad day you think about packing it all in, but as the saying goes, we should never give up!

Wednesday

I have been obsessed with the Urban Decay Gwen Stefani eyeshadow palette for the last while as many of you might have guessed by now! So on Wednesday I posted this shot of my favourite swatches from the palette.

I also shared this picture of my new sunglasses. I’ve been coveting round style shades for a while now, so when I came across these little babies from Custom Vintage Dublin last week, I just had to order them. Perfectly on trend for this summer!

Thursday

I recently got sent some products from the lovely people over at Catrice cosmetics so I’ve been trying them out over the past few weeks. This lipstick from their Ultimate Stay range in shade ‘Don’t Worry Be Berry’ is just gorgeous, it’s my current favourite shade and I’m really impressed with it.

I also shared this Throwback Thursday post from my wedding of our table plan. My theme was an outside, inside candlelit forest kind of theme and I just love this picture. We just got our wedding video a few days ago so I’ve been watching it on repeat and it’s bringing back such incredible memories. I just want to do it all again!

Friday

I love Fridays as we all do, and a Friday meme always puts me in a happy mood. This one I came across last night made me smile.

I also love casual Fridays, and as the sun is finally starting to show its face, I can start to wear flowy blouses and summer shoes again, yay!

So there you go. I don’t know where the weeks are going at the moment, but each week that passes is a week closer to summer, which let’s face it…rocks!

As always, if you’re not following me on Instagram please come say hi here.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

Thursday Thoughts

I’ve had one of those weeks this week, we all have them, and while we’re going through them we can’t seem to escape them.

While I’ve been contemplating all that’s going on in my life, what I’ve realised is that it’s okay to have a bad week. It’s okay to cry, it’s okay to be stressed, it’s okay to rant, and when it’s all over, it’s okay to reflect and move on.

So I’ve decided to channel all my inner positivity today in the hopes of starting this day off on a better note, and prevent another day of dropping my food on the floor, spilling my tea, getting stressed and welling up for no reason.

So on that note, I wish you all a happy, positive Thursday. Let’s all be safe in the knowledge that there’s only one day left until the weekend!

I’ve got my friend Lucy’s hen this weekend so another very fun, exciting weekend ahead and I can’t wait.

Fridaygram

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve shared my Fridaygram with you, things have been hectic with my day job and blogging has unfortunately taken a little bit of a back seat. But as I said earlier this week, I’m back in the swing of things now and promise to keep the blog posts coming.

While things have been busy in work, they’ve also been busy socially too. I had a friend’s wedding, a trip away, a flu, and lots of other bits and pieces going on. As always however, I’ve been snapping away and sharing lots of pictures over on my Instagram, so I’ve put a selection of them together for today’s Fridaygram post.

Friday 4th March

In December we went to the Maldives on our honeymoon and it was the most incredible holiday I’ve ever been on. The weather has been pretty miserable this March so throwback photos to holidays keep me going!

Saturday 5th March

I got a hair chop, there’s nothing like a bit of me time in the hairdressers so I try to go as often as possible. I love the soft curl my new layers give my hair, though it never looks as good when I blow dry it!

Wednesday 9th March

I absolutely love Essie nail polishes, they are my favourite of all the brands as they don’t chip too quickly on my nails. Going to get my nails done is one of my absolute favourite things to do and picking my polish colour is always the most fun part. So much choice, so few nails!

I also spotted these beauties when I was out shopping a few weeks ago, sadly I didn’t purchase but they’ve been added to my wish list.

Sunday 13th March

This was the weekend of my friend Nikki’s wedding in Sheen Falls Lodge in Kerry. On the Sunday I shared a snap of my hair and makeup look for the wedding from the lovely Dearbhla Keenan and Roy Leigh in Brown Sugar. What a great weekend it was.

Friday 18th March

The lovely people over at Catrice Cosmetics sent me some of their SS16 makeup collection to try out. I’m currently testing them out and will be sharing a blog post on my favourite bits from the collection shortly so if you’re a fan of Catrice then watch this space.

Tuesday 22nd March

As I mentioned earlier, I had an awful flu last week so I tried to eat as much berries and healthy foods as possible to detox and boost my immune system. Also, because I just love berries, especially coming into summer.

Thursday 24th March

The day we jetted off to Paris, yay! No weekend break away would be complete without an airport selfie so of course I just had to share one with my glass of vino.

Sunday 27th March

I’ve wanted to go to the Love Lock bridge in Paris for so many years, and I finally got there last weekend. I’ll be sharing a full Paris post on the blog next week with a run down on what we did so you can read all about it then.

Thursday 30th March

If you read my review on the Urban Decay Gwen Stefani eyeshadow palette you’ll have seen this pic already, but this is the makeup look I created using my favourite shade from the palette, Punk.

Today!

It’s a horrible morning in Dublin, it’s raining, it’s grey, it’s depressing. So today I shared this Aloha Friday picture, to cheer myself up and imagine I’m somewhere sunny sipping on a cocktail.

So there you go. I’ll be back to posting this regularly every Friday from next week. Don’t forget, if you’re not already following me on Instagram, then please come say hi and follow what I’m up to over there.

Happy Friday!

Why I Love Being a Woman

Given that yesterday was International Women’s Day, it got me thinking about all the things I love about being a woman. Like I said in my post yesterday, we’re pretty great really and it’s so important that we recognise and celebrate each other.

I’m your typical girly girl, I love beauty and shopping, I love long boozy lunches with the girls and a good gossip. But I’m also someone who has worked hard to get a great education, forge out a path for myself and get good job. I’m outgoing and inquisitive, talkative and curious, understanding and challenging. I’m open and honest, I’m strong minded and sensitive. This is probably the thing I love most about us women, namely that we can be many things, all at the same time.

I love that I am part of a group of people who stand up for what they believe in, who fight to make their mark on the world. I love that I come from a family of strong women and learned a great work ethic from my Mother and Grand Mother. I love that I can talk Politics and celeb gossip in equal amounts. I love that I can work hard everyday to contribute something to the economy and forge out a path for myself. I love that I can experiment with makeup, and get excited about shoes and handbags. I love that nice clothes and pretty things make me happy. I love that I can dance around my bedroom to cheesy 80s music and not take life too seriously. I love that I can hopefully have children one day and raise strong women. I love that I can be married and have a career at the same time. I love that I can be me.

In many respects we are women still living in a man’s world. We’re still fighting for equal pay, we’re still fighting to have both careers and families. But the tides are changing, it’s slow, but it’s changing.

So ladies today I raise a glass to you, and all the women out there that have paved the way for me. Let’s continue to pave the way for all the wonderful women to come.

It’s all about standing together.

Here are just some of the strong women who I love and admire…

Mama’s Day!

It’s that day of the year where we get to celebrate all the incredible, amazing Mamas out there. Our own Mums, our grandmothers, our aunts, our friends…

Where would we be without our Mamas? I for one would be lost without my Mum, she is my confidant, my advisor, my helper, my calmer, my friend. And today I thank her for always being there.

So Happy Mother’s Day to all you lovely Mamas, I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Monday Blues

Happy Monday folks… Or not so happy Monday in my case. Don’t get me wrong, all is okay, but I woke up this morning just feeling a bit blugh. I’m not sure that’s even a word, but it’s the closest literary way I can find to express how I’m feeling today; blugh.

I had a fun, busy weekend with family, we spent Saturday at a wedding and Sunday at a Christening and it was lovely. But last night the Sunday blues started to creep in and they have well and truly exploded into full on Monday blues this morning.

Do you ever experience the Monday blues? What is it about Mondays that make us feel down or sad, or like we want to be somewhere totally different far, far away? Today was one of those mornings where I repeatedly pressed the snooze button on my alarm, not ready for the cold light of day to encroach on my sleep time. It was raining, dull, and grey, and all I wanted to do was stay in my bed.

I was in the middle of a blissful dream that I didn’t want to wake up from. Imagine the scene; Paris, in summer. I just bought my dream lamb-skin classic Chanel handbag. I was sitting in a bar along the Champs-Élysées drinking Rosé Champagne with my hubbie and the Arc de Triomphe was shimmering in the distance. It was a blissful wonderful dream, the kind of dream that made me feel like this was real life.

Then bang. Beep, beep, beep… I slowly woke to my alarm going off and the sound of reality creeping in. Blugh.

I think it’s time for a coffee…
